Information And Facts On The Great Chow Chow Dog Breed

The Chow Chow is a beautiful protective dog who has a bit of a mind of her own. She can stand very cold weather because of her double coat. She can live in an apartment as long as she gets frequent walks but might prefer a fenced enclosure for exercise. She can tend to be a one person dog and she needs a firm hand to be her master.

Good With Children?

She is generally good with children in the family as long as she has been socialized. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Good With Other Pets?

She may do ok with other pets as long as she is socialized with them at an early age.

Training ability

Very high in intelligence and very trainable but may lack in obedience. She is very strong willed.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Chow Chow is 18 to 22 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 45 to 70 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chow Chow is no exception. Look for Entropion, (hereditary disorder where eyelid, usually lower one, rolls inward and irritates the cornea and can cause visual problems. Surgery can correct this condition but may disqualify the dog from shows), canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), ingrown eye lashes and hot skin spots. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Chow Chow comes in two kinds of coats, rough and smooth, both coats are double coated. She should be brushed regularly. She is a seasonally heavy shedder so brushing will help control excess hair, help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Chow Chow can live between 12 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Chow Chow is a northern Chinese ancient breed. She was an all purpose dog used for hunting, pulling, herding and protection. Some were even used for foog and pelts. In fact, Chow Chow is Cantonese for food. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1903.

I started a story but cant finish it can you help me please?

This is all I got can you help me get some more ideas in their so I can get a page (double-spaced)? thank you.... here it is:

You have 133 words--which is about a 1/3 of the page; (375 words would fill up a single page)--you could expand this really easily in no time at all. Add in some descriptions--what does Alaska look like in the winter, how is the weather, what do the dogs look like, etc.

Show your audience, don't tell them. Use vivid descriptions and open your story with a hook--a line that will draw your audience in and want to read/hear more. Make the reader feel like they are there in the frozen noth in the middle of winter.

Also, explain things more--why was Bree your most prized dog, show her in detail, describe her. Describe her personality--saying that she is like Jenna and Nana isn't very helpful if your audience isn't familiar with the movies that those dogs are from. Also if you describe her in detail, you'll be adding more words, which means you'll be closer to your one page goal.

In addition to this, you should consider editing out repeat words--for example you use the name Bree three times in a row in three sentances. "My most prized possession was my dog, *Bree*. *Bree* was sweet not to mention innocent, not exactly a sled dog. *Bree* was like..." My suggestion is that you should fix this by replacing the second 'Bree' with "she".

Also, you should vary sentance lenght. It's a good practice to get into. The length of the average sentace is about 22 words. Throughout a story, even a short one, you should try to vary the lenght as to not tire the reader. In addition to this, your last sentance--"Natalie and my dogs, *were* named from lead dog to wheel dogs, *are* lead: Max, 1st team dog: Jake, 2nd: Bear, 3rd:, 4th: Bon, 5th: Yukon, 6th: Bailey, & the last two dogs are wheel dogs are Murphy and Scarlett-Satin" is a bit long. You could break this one up a bit. Furthermore, you don't have the verb tense agreeing--you have "were" and "are". The "are" should be changed to "were" to agree with the tense of the rest of the story. Furthermore, you should write out "and" in the sentance instead of using the "&" symbol.

BTW: You should be doing your own homework, not asking others to write it for you--it's not fair to your classmates who are working hard on their own stories.

Dog Training with Clickers: What You Need to Know

In this article I am going to discuss clicker training and its use in training dogs. Most people have heard of clicker training but have no clue what it actually is, in this article I will discuss what clicker training is, how to start using it as well as just how powerful clicker training can be. Most dogs take to clicker training very easily and enjoy learning through the use of a clicker.

What Clicker Training Is

Clicker Training is a positive method of training a dog new behaviors. This means there is no correction for the dog getting anything wrong just reward for when it gets the new behavior right. Unlike some other dog training clicker training does not rely on baiting where the dog is simply bribed into performing a certain behavior. The problem with baiting is that its a very dependent on the owner and takes a lot time to become an independent behavior without many cues. As well as allowing you to teach your dog an independent behavior much quicker than with baiting or other conventional dog training it also allows your dog to learn at a fast rate because its being given much clearer instruction.

How Clicker Training Works

The principle behind clicker training is that the click noise given off by the clicker means correct. So the soon learns that the exact position its in or behavior its performing when the clicker goes off means that's the correct position/behavior. When a dog is use to clicker training and is clear when its doing the correct behavior new behaviors are formed very quickly.

The main things to consider when clicker training are rate of reinforcement, timing and motivation. Rate of reinforcement is all about how often your reward and how much of a reward you give. When first starting you should reward often and always remember quickly. You need to reward as soon as the dog has performed the correct behavior this way the message that's right is crystal clear. As your dogs understanding increases the rate of reinforcement can be decreased and your dog should be holding the correct behavior longer. Timing is extremely important in any dog training you must use the clicker the millisecond your dog performs the correct behavior. Clicker training is all about timing the quicker you click and reward the faster the dog will learn the new behavior. The next major thing to consider is motivation without motivation you have nothing a dog must love to work. Unmotivated dogs have no go about them and they simply do not want to work. If a dog does not want to work then you have a serious problem its one hundred percent the training responsibility to make the dog love working. There are many ways to motivate a dog these include treats, toys, fuss and just play in general. Always keep your training short and fun ten to fifteen minutes at a time is perfect any more than this and the dog will get fed up. Remember that you should always finish training when your dog is keen and enjoying the training, never finish when your dog is bored and unmotivated as this produces nothing except a dog who does not enjoy working.

How To Get Started Clicker Training

To get started clicker training all you need is a clicker, a reward and a willing dog. If you have these three things then you have everything you need to start clicker training. Experiment and have fun it's the best way to learn about clicker training and training dogs in general. There's no substitute to a good working relationship with your dog. When you have that great relationship you will find training so much easier because you already know exactly how your dog is going to react to everything you do.

How To Soar With Your Dog

The process is different for small dogs than it is for larger ones, but the first tip applies to both. All dogs flying by commercial airline will be required to have a heath certificate completed by your veterinarian within 10 days of the flight. This is mandatory for all dogs whether they ride with you or in the cargo hold.

If you have a small do the process is fairly simple. Most airlines will allow you to travel with your small dog if he is in a proper carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. They require the crate to allow room for your pet to stand up and turn around while inside. Larger dogs must ride in the cargo hold and are subjected to shifting luggage, uncomfortable surroundings, loud noises and changes in air pressure. This can be extremely stressful for your dog and you should discuss the option of tranquilizers with your vet. If possible you should test the tranquilizer dose at some point before the trip to see how your pet responds. If he responds well then you should consider tranquilizing him for the trip. You should also consider filling the bottom of the crate with shredded newspaper. Even potty-trained dogs can have accidents in this type of environment and the newspaper will help to absorb any unintentional leaks.

You are responsible for securing the proper crate and transporting it to check in. All kennels should be plastic hard-side kennels with wire doors. Varikennels are the most popular choice among people who travel by air with their dogs. Some airlines require a lock on the crate, while others do not. Always make sure you clearly label the crate with live animal stickers, your address, phone number and destination city and stickers indicating which end is up. Kennels should also be equipped with food or water bowls that clip to the door and are not loose in the kennel. You are responsible for food and water for your dog. If you freeze the water beforehand then it will not spill during the boarding process and provide lasting hydration for your best friend.

Airlines can charge anywhere between $150 and $350 to transport your dog in the cargo hold and there are restrictions on what days your pet is permitted to fly. Generally speaking airlines will not transport live animals between May 15^th and September 15^th because temperatures reach unsafe levels within the cargo hold. You should check the weather before you fly because the airline will not board your dog if the temperature is over 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This is an important safety precaution because dogs are prone to heat strokes when confined in non-ventilated areas at these temperatures. If you must fly during the summer, book an overnight flight when temperatures are much lower. There are also space limitations for live cargo so you should always make plans in advance by calling the airline to find out what the requirements are for your pooches travel day.

Preparation is key when flying with your pooch. Some airlines have additional fees, breed and size limitations or other policies that could affect your travel plans. Always call ahead to get a clear explanation of the policies in place and follow the directions to the letter. Do not assume that you will be accommodated upon arrival if you did not follow the directions. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 airlines have tightened restrictions on all travelers and four legged ones are no exception.

Pet Shock Collar

We suspect that our dog had a bark collar when the previous owner had him. Is there long term affects from it?

My dog does't bark very much. Is it possible that Bark collars has a long term affect on the dogs?

I bought a dog 10 years ago. She was 6 months old, a product of divorce....Because the un loving spouse had her, she was totally untrained. This is a breed that takes a long time to bond. You have to work very hard to deserve their love/trust. Well, she was a CONSTANT barker. I mean CONSTANT. She had had the run of the whole countryside before I got her, and she was very unhappy about being kept in a large yard. She wasn't comfortable in the house.She was barking for pure stress...her world had totally changed.I have been a trainer/breeder since 1968, so I knew all the things to try to make her quit barking, and feel less stressed. Although I lived in the country, I had neighbors about 500 feet away. Her barking was finally driving them crazy. I consulted a respected local trainer, and he suggested the sonic (not electric) bark collar. ($30 at WalMart) I put it on her, and she stopped barking in two days. I took it off for the last time after two weeks. I didn't have to scold her anynore, and we became the very best of friends. She is at my feet as I sit here, she is in my bed at night, and never wants me out of her sight. She is my best friend. She went on to win her championship in just 6 shows. I have loaned that collar to my friends, and all have been happy with the results.
She still barks when there is something to warn me about. The collar alowed one 'free' bark, and then sounded an unpleasant tone on the second bark, which got louder with each bark.
