Dachshund's coats come in a variety of colors and lengths, with the long-haired Dachshund requiring the most intensive grooming process. This is not to say that one should be put off from owning a long-haired Dachshund, only that it requires a little more effort than the other, shorter coat varieties. It is not a difficult process, but it is important to regularly brush, trim, and clean the coat of the long-hair.
Many people mistakenly believe that long-haired Dachshunds shed more than their short- and wiry-haired counterparts. This is not true! All three versions of the breed shed equally, but the long-haired Dachshund's shedding can be slightly more obvious because their hair is in fact so long. The long-haired variety of Dachshund also has an undercoat, which is thinner and lighter. This undercoat may become a nuisance during shedding seasons, as it can pile up in the carpeting and upholstery pretty quickly!
Frequent brushing of the undercoat and topcoat will help to minimize shedding. In the summers, when the shedding season is upon us, your Dachshund may need to be groomed daily. In the winter, when the breed retains its coat and undercoat for warmth, brushing can be less frequent. Different regions can result in different grooming needs for these dogs. They are very adaptable, but if you live in an area where it is warm year round, you will have to groom accordingly.
Brushing is not an arduous process. In fact, it can be an enjoyable bonding experience for both you and your dog. Combing and brushing the fur will help clear out dead hair and stimulate the skin. The long-haired Dachshund has the standard short and smooth fur on their faces and heads, which will not require brushing. Regular petting for these areas will have the same benefits as brushing for the long coat on the rest of their bodies.
When brushing your long-haired Dachshund, it is very important to pay attention to the trouble spots - areas that are prone to matting and collecting debris. The "skirt" (the hair that hangs down from your Dachshund's torso), the underarms, and the tail are all likely to collect dust, dirt, and other junk found on walks or inside the house, and are most prone to matting. Regular, even daily brushing of these areas is absolutely essential, especially if your dog is exposed to nature regularly. Twigs and stickers can become very painful nuisances if not removed right away!
As with most breeds, it is also important to keep the hair between the digits of their paws trimmed and clean. This hair can grow very long on Dachshunds and can make it difficult for them to walk if they accidentally pick up some debris.
Dachshunds have been known to get into some terrible messes and roll around in whatever smells bad, but one must be sure not to over-bathe the long-haired variety, as they can be very prone to dry skin. Finding an unscented, natural dog shampoo for sensitive skin will help alleviate this problem, especially if your pup has a penchant for finding the mud.
Of course, the best method of discerning how often and intensively any long-haired Dachshund needs to be groomed is careful observation. If you spend lots of time with your dog and pay careful attention to his or her coat, you will know when he or she needs to be brushed.

So you want a big bench? Who doesn't? You have probably had a dream or two of benching 700 pounds to beat Anthony Clark and win a benching title. Well I hate to burst you bubble but it ain't going to happen. Even if Clark was a geriatric he would probably destroy most mortals. As I said it won't happen, at least it won't happen unless you begin to train correctly.
Think about it. How can powerlifters bench 700+ lbs while bodybuilders on the same 'stuff' can only at best bench 500lbs even though they appear much more muscular. It is all in the training. Reaching a PB in any lift requires intelligent training, diet and rest. For some people benching 500 might be a goal and for others 200 might be more realistic. Which ever category you fall into these tips will help you achieve your goals and reach your potential.
1. Train Heavy
No-Brainier huh. Define heavy? Last chest session I bet you did 6-8 reps and felt like your chest would cave in. TOO LIGHT!!! You cannot afford to do more than 5 reps if strength is your goal. Don't worry you won't lose muscle by dropping back the reps, in fact you probably will gain a bit. You need to do 5's, triples, doubles and singles to get stronger.
2. Add more sets
Instead of doing 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps, do 8-12 sets of 3-4 reps. This is not overtraining, it's training for strength.
3. Train with a partner
If you can't lift the bar after your fourth rep of 350lbs you are in a spot of bother.
4. Train explosively
Louie Simmons, the man who has trained more big benchers than anybody and the owner of the Westside barbell club, recommends this. Get a weight 60% of your 1RM and do 8-12 sets with 2-3 reps. Move the weight VERY fast in both the positive and negative direction without losing control. This will train the neural system to explode with power, exactly what you need when you have a loaded bar across you chest. Do this as a separate session to your normal chest work NOT at the same time.
5. For your chest train the rest
Your chest is not the only piece to the big bench puzzle. The Lats, triceps and delts all play major roles. Train the body parts hard also. If your lockout is poor then it is probably your triceps but it you have trouble just off you chest your lats need work. Do assistance work like lockouts, rows and dips.
6. Never Max out week to week
You should only Max out every 8 weeks or so. You can Max out on assistance work, in fact it is encouraged week to week, but don't Max on your bench.
Got a sticking point off the chest or at lockout? Try this. Set a bench in a power rack. Position the pins at the area of problem e.g.. 2 inches off the chest, two inches short of lockout or in the middle. Get a bar, with no weight and press it just like a bench press up against the pins. Breathe in and HOLD YOUR BREATH. Press the bar against the pins for a count of 12 seconds before you stop. After a few weeks you can gradually bring that back to 8 seconds. If you want you can even do isometrics for each of the areas: top, middle and bottom.
8. Take Creatine Monohydrate
Form personal experience I know this adds HEAPS to you bench press Max and regular sets.
9. Eat Lots
High protein high calorie just like mass gaining
10. Rest
Don't train too much. You also must have at least 72 hours between your heavy bench and speed bench days.
There you have it. 10 steps to a bigger bench (or curl or squat or whatever). Apply these principles and you will get stronger. Another plus is when you resume training normally you will be stronger therefore you can lift more weight and gain more muscle. Give it a go, and who knows you may never be Anthony Clark but that doesn't mean there aren't billions of others to beat.

Yes it is safe depending on what you dress the dog up in with. Just make sure no things or objects are hanging on the clothes that could get caught on something & strangle, restrict the dog's movement, get the dog tangled in or hurt the dog. Plain tees are fine just as long there's a good purpose for it like to protect stitches after surgery or to keep the dog warm but dressing it up on a hot summer day is not a good idea.

Many people feel that feral cats cannot be kept indoors as pets. This is not true. In fact, feral cats are happy being kept as indoor only pets if you don't attempt to treat them exactly like tame cats.
What are Feral Cats?
Feral cats are cats that haven't been properly socialized. What this means behaviorally is that feral cats are not tame toward humans. Very often, feral cats result from the offspring of cats that were once owned and then abandoned. As a result, the kittens are not properly socialized to humans and become feral.
There is a critical period during kitten development in which kittens must be exposed to human caretakers, otherwise they will be feral or at least semi-feral. This critical developmental period is generally from birth to 8 weeks old. If the first human exposure occurs past the age of 8 weeks this usually results in a feral or semi-feral cat. Sometimes older feral kittens can be tamed toward one or two human caretakers.
What to do if You Find a Feral Cat or Kitten
Many well meaning cat lovers will find feral kittens and take them to their local animal shelter. Unfortunately, feral kittens aren't very adoptable and most of the time animal shelters will destroy the feral kittens to make room for tame kittens that are more likely to be adopted.
Fortunately, there are some shelters that will spay or neuter the kittens and then return the kittens to their natural environment. This at least gives the feral cat a chance to live without the ability of producing more feral cats. This program is called Trap-Neuter-Return, and it is being implemented in many areas to control the outdoor cat population without having to kill the cats. It generally works like this: The kittens are caught in a humane trap, such as Havahart live animal traps. The animal is unharmed. Then the cat is taken to the vet or the shelter that participates in Trap-Neuter-Return and the animal is spayed or neutered and is usually given some vaccines. When the cat has recovered from the spay or neuter surgery the cat is returned outdoors in the same location where it was found. Trap-Neuter-Return is a much more humane way of dealing with feral cats and kittens than euthanasia.
Feral Kittens Can Also Make Very Rewarding Pets
Some people who find feral kittens take them into their homes as pets. This can be a very rewarding experience as you gain the trust of these special cats. It is also the best option for the well-being of the feral cat or kitten. Taking them into your home as a pet is even better than Trap-Neuter-Return programs. Taking them in as pets generally works best if you catch them when they are relatively young. The younger the better, although some people have taken older feral cats into their homes as pets and they have been fine.
It is also best to take in two feral kittens or cats from the same litter if possible. If this isn't possible it is best to have at least one other cat in the household because feral kittens and cats really enjoy the company of other cats.
Feral cats need to be kept as indoor only cats. Cats sometimes behave differently once they get outside. Because feral kittens and cats don't trust humans very much they may be fearful of approaching your house once they are outside and they may get lost. In general, they are very fearful of any humans other than the human caretakers that they have grown to trust.
I have four feral cats that have lived with me for about 2 years now and they have been very happy indoors. Three were caught when they were 10 weeks old and the fourth cat was caught when she was 12 weeks old.
For the first few weeks after I brought them in the house, all of the kittens used to hiss when I walked by them. Eventually they came to trust me and stopped hissing when they saw me. In fact, now they greet me at the door after work. When I wake up in the morning they come up on the bed to greet me the very first thing. They love playing with toys and with each other. They are still semi-feral, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing how happy they are and knowing that they are indoors where it is warm and safe.
However, they aren't exactly like other cats. For the most part you can't pick them up. One of the kittens lets me pick her up and kiss her on top of her little head, but the other kittens don't allow it (Actually, they are no longer kittens, but they still seem like babies to me). However, they do like to play toys with me, and except for one of them, they do like to be petted and to have their fur brushed.
Feral cats and kittens would not make good pets for children. Basically feral cats that live indoors with humans like to do their own thing most of the time. They don't want to be held and will usually only let you pet them on a limited basis. Because of this they are likely to scratch a child that attempts to have more contact with them than the cat wants. The key to making a feral cat happy is to only have as much contact with the cat as it wants.
Also, you need to give the shy ones extra space when they are using the litter or eating. Sometimes it is best to keep their litter and food bowls in low human traffic areas so that they can feel safe while eating or using the litter box.
Vet trips can be difficult because they don't always allow you to pick them up to put them into the pet carrier. However, there are ways to do it. Sometimes you can throw their favorite toy into the carrier and they will run in to get it and then all you have to do is shut the cat carrier door.
Feral cats are well worth the extra work and they are the best pets ever! Also, because they only want limited contact with humans you generally don't have to worry about them walking on your keyboard while you are typing or laying across you newspaper or book while you are reading.
In my opinion there is nothing more rewarding then gaining the trust of these cats, especially if you don't mind taking their special needs into consideration. The reward comes in knowing that you are providing a loving, warm, happy home with plenty of food, water, toys, and veterinary care for these special cats.

Here is some info about diet, vaccines, etc.
Kittens are bad about putting EVERYTHING in their mouths, so you have to choose your litter carefully. I use a type of chicken feed called "laying crumbles". It is the EXACT same thing as World's Best cat litter except you can get 50lbs for $10 rather than 20lbs for $20. It clumps and, since it is a food item, you won't have to worry if your kitten decides to try some. If you feel the need to add something to it, just mix in some baking soda.
Have the box set up before you bring the kitten home. That way, you can take the kitten and put it in the box and let it explore your house from there. That way, it will know where the box is. I have done this w/ 3 cats who were 11mos, 4mos, and 9wks old and it worked just fine for all three of them.

In all instances, you should not allow your cat to free-feed. Set two regular meal times for adults and three for cats under 6 months old. Cats are hunters – not grazers – and, therefore, aren’t designed to have access to food at all times.
Feeding Options
1.The best choice would be a natural, raw diet: the natural choice is always the best one. Cats are obligate carnivores which means they are physically obligated to derive their nutrition from animal sources. Please refer to the Feline Raw Food Diet Basics attachment for detailed information.
2.The 2nd best choice would be a freeze dried or dehydrated food: a good choice for freeze dried food is Nature’s Variety Freeze Dried Diets. They come in Chicken & Turkey, Beef, Venison, and Lamb. It is made from freshly ground USDA meat, organ, and bone sources. Each diet is 95% meat, organs, and bones with a portion of these products from certified organic sources. For a good dehydrated food, I would suggest Prowl by Honest Kitchen. It is a grain-free diet, made with 60% Human Grade hormone-free chicken, plus eggs, potatoes, yams, flaxseed, zucchini, spinach, honey, cranberries (for urinary tract health) and rosemary. This recipe has been formulated to meet the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for adult maintenance and can be fed as a stand alone diet, or as a nutritionally balanced base for home made raw or cooked cat food. Prowl must be hydrated with warm water before serving. One tablespoon of Prowl will make about ½ oz of fresh food when hydrated. Hydrated food is a great choice for cats since it provides them with plenty of fluid which is vital for their delicate urinary and excretory systems. A 4 lb. bucket of Prowl will hydrate to make about 10 lbs. of fresh food.
3.The 3rd best choice would be a home-cooked diet: just like with the raw diet, provide plenty of variety to ensure a good balance of nutrition and to prevent finickiness. The recipe below calls for ground meats, but I suggest using a big chunk of meat – i.e. part of a boneless chicken breast instead of ground chicken – from time to time in order to clean your cat’s teeth. Do not give cooked, bone-in items to your cat as a part of a home cooked diet because cooking changes the molecular structure of bones and makes them prone to splintering.
I suggest you make enough for several meals and freeze 2 meals to a ziplock bag. Label the bag; sometimes it’s hard to tell which meat is which when they’re frozen.
You can crack open an egg about once a week and add it to the meat mixture as you cook it. When a carnivore’s food is cooked, it looses nutrition, so please only cook the food lightly.

You can feed: canned sardines (in water or olive oil), or canned mackerel or salmon w/bone. Do not cook these items; just feed them directly from the can. Freeze any leftovers.
If using 1/2 pound of chicken and 1/2 egg, the diet will provide 471 kcal, 53.1 gm of protein, and 27.4 gm of fat. An adult indoor 10-pound cat requires approximately 300 kcal of energy per day, an adult outdoor 10-pound cat requires approximately 360 kcal of energy per day, and a 5- pound kitten requires approximately 300 kcal of energy per day.
4.The 4th best option would be a grain-free canned food diet: the brands I am aware of are Wellness (excluding the Chicken & Lobster, Sardine, Shrimp & Crab and Salmon & Trout Formulas), Nature’s Variety, Wysong Au Jus All Meats, Innova Evo Canned (**Please note that this food is very high in phosphorus and would not be a good food choice for any cat that is showing signs of renal insufficiency), Avoderm Select Cuts, Solid Gold Blended Tuna, Canine Caviar Canned Food for Cats and Dogs, and Halo Spot's Stew for Cats.
5.The 5th best option would be 1 meal of grain-free dry food and 1 meal of grain-free canned food: your two choices for grain-free kibble are Innova EVO and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct for Cats. I have this as the least favorable option because cats are designed to obtain most of their water with their diet since their normal prey contains approximately 75 percent water. Dry foods only contain 10% water whereas canned foods contain approximately 78% water. Canned foods therefore more closely approximate the natural diet of the cat and are better suited to meet the cat’s water needs. A cat consuming a predominantly dry-food diet does drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet because it is not “programmed” to drink a large amount of water apart from what it gets from its prey. Therefore, the cat will not make up for the difference on its own.

FELINE RAW FOOD DIET BASICS
Raw foods are the most powerful healers for our companion animals. They are the most digestible and absorbable nutrients that we can provide. They are the building blocks for our animal’s innate healing abilities - tissue repair and organ regeneration. In my experience, the health benefits of the raw food diet surpass any other diet - homemade or commercial. The raw food diet is just as nature intended, a natural diet fit for the digestive system of a carnivore. Homemade cooked recipes provide approximately 60% optimum absorbable nutritional value, whereas the highest quality commercial preservative-free pet food rates provide < 50% optimum absorbable nutritional value. A balanced raw food diet provides 95% optimum absorbable nutritional value. Offering a large variety of high quality meats will increase the optimum absorbable nutritional value to 98%.
Just as with humans, nutritional caloric intakes of cats vary greatly with metabolism. This is not an exact science just as feeding ourselves is not a calculated effort for most people. The goal is to have an optimal “Body Condition Score” where they will eat far less raw food since more is absorbed and utilized for lean muscle tissue. In simplified terms, the optimal “Body Condition Score” is defined as a body condition where you can see a definitive waist in front of the hips (looking from above) and you can easily feel their individual ribs. Any intentional weight loss should be gradual. Weights should be checked at least every other week in the beginning so you can determine the maintenance amounts of food for your cat. Guidelines for amounts to feed for an adult cat of average health and activity are about 2-3% of the ideal adult body weight. The method of feeding 2-3% of the adult weight goes for kittens, as well.
CONVERTING CATS TO RAW
Unlike dogs, cats are usually quite finicky and will require a slow conversion to a raw diet. If your cat likes canned cat food, you can go to the store and get some ground chicken or turkey and start adding a tiny bit of it to his/her canned food. Feed him/her this twice a day. The ground meat will be easier to mix with the canned food. Add more and more of the raw meat to his/her food until he/she is just eating the raw turkey or chicken. This will take you 1-2wks to switch him/her to the raw. Try to stick with the turkey, chicken, and beef flavors of cat food to get him/her away from eating fish flavored stuff.
Feed this the mixture twice a day – three times if less than six months old - to simultaneously teach your cat that there will be no more free-feeding (bad for cats b/c they are hunters, not grazers) and to get him/her accustomed to the feeding routine that you will use with his/her raw diet.
If your cat is a kibble addict, then simply start off with feeding two separate meals of kibble for a few days. Start adding a very small amount of canned food to the kibble. Slowly increase the ratio of canned to kibble until your cat is eating two meals a day of just canned food. From here, follow the canned food instructions above.
FELINE DIET
75% Raw Meat. The meat needs to be RAW – not cooked! For the most part concern over the use of raw meat is unwarranted. I have never personally seen a problem with bacterial overload such as E. coli or Salmonella as a result of feeding raw meat. Everything has a natural balance and the digestive tracts of cats are designed to ingest raw meat.
Turkey, Chicken, Duck, Pheasant, Quail, Emu, Ostrich, Rhea, Beef, Buffalo, Lamb, Llama, Venison, Goat, Pork, Rabbit, Squirrel, Rats, Mice and Fish are all acceptable sources of meat, but do NOT feed raw salmon.
After your cat has been on raw food for a while, vary the meat if you can, steady feeding of the same food can lead to hypersensitivities. Offering a variety of different meats is very beneficial, but just by feeding the raw food diet you are way ahead of the game. Variety at least 2-3 days a week is usually sufficient. Most people tend to feed chicken, beef, lamb, pork, rabbit, venison, and fish simply because they are the easiest to acquire. Freeze all wild game for 2 weeks prior to feeding to kill off any possible parasites.
10% Raw Organ Meat. This includes liver, kidney, heart, gizzard, spleen, etc. from all of the acceptable meats listed above. Organ meat can be offered a few times a week with the raw muscle meat. Liver and heart are two of the most important and should be at least 50% of the organs fed, but care should be taken with liver at first since it is a very rich food. Give very small amounts at a time when first introducing it so as to keep your cat from getting loose stools. Heart is actually a muscle (cardiac muscle) and can be fed as a stand alone meal if one wishes.
15% Bones. Most prey animals consist of 8-20% bone depending on the animal. Some examples of acceptable bone in meals for cats would include bits and pieces of smaller animals such as parts of rabbits, chicken wings or ribs, duck wings, small fish such as sardines, the occasional whole, ground rabbit or coarse ground turkey.
Whole Prey. Whole animals are the very best thing you can feed your cat. Everything – meat, bones, and organs – are in one perfect package. This is the natural state in which a carnivore would find its food in the wild; fur, feathers, and all. Whole prey the appropriate size for cats would be squirrel, a small rabbit, quail, chicks, mice, fish, or some other small animals. Do not fret about the idea of having to see you cat chase adorable and helpless chicks and bunnies around your house; you simply order frozen feeder animals and thaw them to room temp just as you would any other meal.
Vitamin/Mineral Supplements. It is not necessary to add supplements unless you are trying to treat a specific ailment. Adding too many supplements can actually make the diet imbalanced.
Essential Fatty Acids. Fatty acids rich in Omega-3 are also okay to add to the diet in lieu of feeding fish or during the winter months when skin can get dried out. It is preferable that it is from an animal source such as salmon oil or cod liver oil.
Calcium. Raw bones are the preferred main source of calcium, IF YOU CANNOT FEED BONES, YOU MUST USE A CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT! Bone meal is not recommended due to frequent heavy metal contamination- know your source. Good quality calcium supplements can be obtained from Animals Essentials, Pat McKay, Celestial Pet, etc.
Eggs. Eggs are an excellent and highly absorbable source of protein. You can add raw egg to your cat’s meal once or twice a week.
Milk and milk products. I do not recommend milk products because most cats are lactose intolerant.
Fasting. Cats do not mobilize fat reserves for energy very efficiently and, in fact, break down non-fatty body tissues for energy. This upsets the internal chemical factory and can lead to a very dangerous feline disorder called hepatic lipidosis. Make sure your cat eats every day. This also means weight loss regimens for overweight cats should be very gradual.
SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS OF CATS
Taurine. Is an amino acid that is not built into proteins, but is distributed throughout most body tissues. Taurine is important for healthy functioning of the heart, retina, bile fluid and certain aspects of reproduction. Heart is very rich in taurine and should be added to a boneless meal at least twice a week.
Arachidonic Acid. Just as there are different qualities of proteins, some fats are better than others in providing essential fatty acids. Fats can be found in both vegetable matter and animal tissue. Liquid fats like safflower and corn oils consist of 50-70% linoleic acid. Cats cannot make their own Arachidonic Acid even in the presence of adequate linoleic acid. The reason cats can’t make Arachidonic Acid from linoleic acid is because the cat’s chemical factory (liver) contains no delta-6-desaturase enzyme to convert linoleic to Arachidonic. Arachidonic acid is found only in animal fats. A cat's requirement for arachidonic acid in the diet makes it a truly carnivorous animal. Poultry fat is an excellent source of arachidonic acid.
Arginine. Arginine is another amino acid required in much higher amounts by cats. Arginine is essential for converting the waste product ammonia into urea, so that it can be excreted by the kidneys. Insufficient arginine levels can cause depression and seizures. According to the USDA Nutrient Database, 1 chicken wing contains 0.585g arginine and 33g of ground beef contains 0.374g.
