Bernese Mountain Dog Puppy And Dog Information

The Bernese Mountain Dog is actually an outdoor dog that can adapt to indoors as long as she is given plenty of exercise when it is cool outside. Her heavy coat means that she is comfortable in the cold but suffers in the heat. She has a loving temperament and has been described as stable, faithful, affectionate and intelligent. She is a good watch dog and good with children. Just as a reminder, never leave young children unsupervised with a puppy or dog for any length of time.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Bernese Mountain Dog is 24 to 28 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 85 to 110 pounds. Females range from 23 to 27 inches to the withers and from 80 to 105 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Bernese Mountain Dog is no exception. Be on the look out for canine hip and elbow dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), gastric torsions, metabolic bone disease and hereditary eye disease. She should be fed twice a day to lessen the chance of bloat, another negative health consideration. Additionally, cancer is a real problem with even young dogs can contract it.
*Grooming. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a long, thick coat so she should be brushed as frequently as daily, weekly if time does not permit. She is a heavy seasonal shedder and brushing will help keep your house cleaner. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and also help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with your pet.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.
*Life Span. The Bernese Mountain Dog can live between 8 and 10 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*History. The Bernese Mountain Dog came from the pre alpine regions around Bern, Switzerland. She was used as a cattle dog, draught dog and as a cattle driver. The original name of this dog was Durrbachler, because it was so popular in the hamlet of Durrbach. Around 1910 a standard for this dog was set and she was renamed the Bernese Mountain Dog. She became popular throughout Switzerland and Southern Germany. From there she became known throughout the world as a striking family dog. The American Kennel Association first registered Bernese Mountain Dogs in 1937. Currently she is used as pet and watch dog, for therapy work, agility trials, and rescue work.

Paper Training a Dog - Easy Steps to Paper Training Your Dog

First, Choose a specific area of the house for your to use as toilet area, pick a area such kitchen or laundry this area are free of carpet and making easy for clean.

Place newspaper thickly in a corner of this room. Spread the newspaper area pretty big, since your pup has no idea that she's meant to go on the paper at all. Watch the dog carefully and as soon as you notice it to whimper, sniffing the ground and running in circles, bring the dog immediately the spot where you want it to do its business. When the dog goes potty in the right newspaper-covered spot, praise it lavishly, before removing the soiled paper.

Replace the newspaper and spread in a select area where your dog used as a toilet. At first, your puppy will eliminate pretty much at random on the paper. It's important for the paper-training process that she only gets to go on the paper. If your dog make an accident simply wash the area with warm water and rinse with diluted vinegar to kill the odor the dog has left.

When your dog is consistently eliminating on the newspaper start to take some pieces away until eventually it only has one or two pieces of newspaper left to wee on.

Use terms for "going potty" consistently and praise him when it goes potty on the right spot. Have treats available to give the dog rewards when it has done the right thing quite well.

Feed your dog at specific, scheduled times (for example, a meal at 8 am, 1 pm, and 7 pm) to encourage her to develop an "elimination timetable". This will help you and the dog avoid accidents during a time when it is difficult to move to its potty spot.

With this practical steps and consistency and care you could teach your dog to eliminate at the right place using paper training.

How can I train an old dog to go wee-wee outside? Male-not neutered. Has anyone ever used a doggy-litter box?

I saw a set-up for a litter-box using what I think was bark (?) He is only able to go out onto the back porch (cement), until I can walk him. But he won't go out there. He goes in house.

Well, I know that you can buy things called "pee pads", which supposedly have a scent on them that makes an animal want to go on them. You can buy them at a pet store or Wal-Mart, and they are about a foot and a half by about 2 feet, give or take. And they are not very expensive, either, under $20 I believe.

Crying over spilled milk!?

My four year old son spilled chocolate milk in the back seat of my car. I soaked up the milk as soon as it happened (or so I thought), but a few days later my car began to STINK! After trying a carpet cleaner with a scubbie top, thinking it was just on the upholstery with no results, I finally took out the back seat of my car to find that the cushion/foam that the seat is made of is growing mold and covered with dried chocolate milk. Any suggestions to help get rid of the smell?? My car is a lease and I MUST get this taken care of! I did try saturating the seat with Kids N' Pets cleaner and it is sitting outside drying, but last I checked it still smells... HELP!!

In my opinion I would try a steam cleaner that has an uphoulstry attachment and steam clean the seat, top and bottom including the foam. Cleaner and hot water with a steam cleaner should do the trick by ridding it of the milk and mold, and the heat will kill the odor causing bacteria.
