Dog Clothes Hoodie

Where can I find a Dog Hoodie?

I need to find a hoodie for my dog. Do you know of any companies that specialize in clothes for large breed deep chested dogs? All of the clothes I find at the pet stores are too small for her. She is only 50 pounds, but every where I have looked only makes clothes for yorkie - beagle sized dogs. Can you help me?

I too have a deep chested dog (Weimaraner) and have problems finding clothes for her at PetsMart as they only cater to the "small" dog. I found a great company that is very easy to deal with called Drs. Foster & Smith. They have an online catelog and they do sell sweaters, jackets, hoodies and sweatshirts for dogs in all types of sizes. Once you go to their website you can have them send you monthly catelogs. They sell EVERYTHING and are quite reasonable.

Another place you can check is EBAY they sell dog clothing and in all sorts of sizes.

Creating Firefighting Scrapbooks For Your Son - 7 Simple Tips

Scrapbooking reflects the principle of "organized chaos." You can put almost anything in a scrapbook, and creativity is a major asset for people who make scrapbooks (or scrappers). You can combine a wide range of materials, colors, textures, and images to create something as unique as you are.

Yet, every scrapbook is organized around a theme, the subject of the scrapbook. It may be a person's life, an important event, a favorite vacation location, or any number of things the scrapper wants to remember. Scrapbooks are meant to preserve and interpret favorite memories, but the best scrapbooks do it in a way that tells a story.

The theme ties every element together in your scrapbook. If you're making a scrapbook for a gift, your theme may be something that is important to the recipient. A very popular theme for young boys is firefighters.

Especially since 2001, all of us have been more aware of how heroic these public servants must be. Many grown men still dream of becoming a firefighter long after childhood is over.

Creating a scrapbook on a firefighter theme is a great project that you can ask your young man to join. Even though young boys may find the idea too girlie at first, they'll love helping find the images and embellishments representing firefighters. You and your project assistant can have a great time collecting the elements and creating a firefighting scrapbook honoring the profession and telling the child's story at the same time.

Here are some ideas for themes and supporting elements that may get your and your young potential firefighter off to a good start.

1. Colors.

There are several colors we associate with firefighting that make great color schemes for scrapbooks. Beginning with the ever-popular "fire engine red" and white, you recall the familiar fire trucks and sirens. But you don't want to create an "ambulancing" scrapbook, so you can add other colors common to firefighting. Mustard yellow is the color of a fireman's coat or parka and the oxygen tank he wears into burning buildings.

Another nice touch is to use the colors of the traditional firefighting dog. Black spots on a white background help honor the Dalmatian and keep your scrapbook color scheme interesting. Combining red and orange with a deep blue represents flames, and adding aqua or light blue introduces water.

2. Images and Firefighting Shapes.

Images are an important basic element of any scrapbook. Using familiar images, shapes, and symbols maintains your firefighting theme and adds to your scrapbook pages. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

3. Fire Engine. This popular vehicle is easy to recognize and easy to reproduce for your scrapbook. Your young man will quickly know what it is by its familiar shape and bright fire engine red colors. You can use it as a background image or make cut-outs to frame your photos and mementos.

4. Firefighter. Firemen have a familiar and recognizable silhouette, with their fire hat, parka, and axe. You can show your firefighter in different poses and positions throughout the scrapbook to add a sense of action to your pages. Holding the fire hose, climbing the ladder, or bringing a person out of the flames are all exciting ways to honor their courage.

5. Fire Hydrant. Another familiar shape and image is the fire hydrant. You can add that mustard yellow color to complement the firefighter's parka, and the hydrant shape makes a great frame. But you may want to be careful in how you use it, given the hydrant's popularity with dogs.

6. Hook and Ladder. This vehicle has very distinctive features that represent the firefighter in action.

7. Firefighter Symbols and Shapes. Several shapes come to mind when thinking about firefighting. The familiar shape of the fireman's badge is a nice one for scrapbooks. The fireman's hat is a distinctive shape easy to recognize. You might also consider cut-outs of Dalmatians, flames, the fireman's axe, or the siren to accent your pages and make your theme loud and clear.

These are just a few ideas for a firefighting scrapbook. You and your young boy will have a great time thinking of other ways to incorporate the firefighter theme in your scrapbook.

Can you use any other companies collars when using the Invisible Fence Co's unit?

I have an Invisible Fence unit but you have to replace the batteries in the collar every 3 mos. I can get a collar from Intek that only needs replacing every 2 yrs. I wonder if they are interchangable.

Dog Behavior Problems - Chewing

How many of your belongings has your dog destroyed? Chewing is a behavior problem that is so frustrating because it can mean big bucks when it is your carpet, sofa, or expensive leather shoes. This is one dog behavior problem that you’ve got to nip in the bud.

The first thing to consider is that dogs need to chew for their mental and dental health. In the wild, chewing is not a dog behavior problem, but a necessity. Make sure that your dog has plenty of safe chew toys to play with. This isn’t going to fix your dog’s chewing problem, but it is only fair to give your dog a healthy outlet for his need to chew.

Once your dog has some toys he is allowed to chew, now you can go to work on showing him what he isn’t allowed to chew.

The first line of defense I recommend to all of my clients is a bitter apple or dog training spray. This is a spray that is manufactured to have a nasty taste to a dog. The idea is that you spray it on the things that your dog wants to chew and when he does chew, the taste will be so unpleasant that it will discourage him from ever chewing on that item again. This spray can work. I have seen several reactions from the spray:

1. Your dog will hate the taste of the spray so much that it will cure him on the spot from ever chewing again. Consider this dog behavior problem gone.

2. Your dog will dislike the taste of the spray so he won’t chew. But then the spray wears off and he goes back to chewing. You can combat this with regular spraying or you can go on to a solution I will discuss later.

3. Your dog doesn’t mind the taste and will keep chewing. You can try a different brand of spray or you can try the following solution.

4. Your dog actually likes the taste of the spray and it is like putting gravy on mashed potatoes. He can’t get enough.

If your dog fits somewhere in number one or two consider yourself lucky. Many dogs are in category three or four. For them you must take a different approach with this dog behavior problem and get a bit more aggressive with your behavior modification techniques.

Supervise your dog. Most times dogs chew out of boredom or obsession and often they do it while you are close by. You must supervise your dog so that you can catch him in the act of chewing. It does you no good to find out that your dog has chewed on something 5 hours, 5 minutes, or even 5 seconds after he has committed his naughty behavior. It must be within one and a half seconds of the act of chewing for you to be able to adequately make your dog link the act of chewing with the associated correction. And correct you must. The best way to correct your dog for chewing is to have him wear a dog training collar (preferably a pinch collar or prong collar ) and a leash while in the house. When he goes to chew on your sofa you can quickly grab the leash and give it a very strong jerk while telling him “No” with a firm voice. If you can catch him in the act of chewing every time several times in a row, and give him a strong correction with the leash, you can get ride of this dog behavior problem while you are around. I will discuss in a moment how to proof this behavior when you aren’t in the room. But for now make sure that you supervise your dog constantly. If you catch him in the act only sometimes when you are paying attention, and not at other times he will soon learn that chewing is ok when you aren’t paying attention. If you can’t supervise him, leave him in a crate or in the backyard where he won’t be able to chew on undesirable things.

This should cure your dog of chewing while you are around.

A problem that I often encounter, however, is the clever dog that has already learned to only chew when someone is not paying attention. It is difficult to correct this dog for chewing because you don’t ever see him do it. It is time to trick this dog.

Smear some peanut butter or cheese (I know, it is going to make your shoes or sofa smell with food smeared on them, but it will clean off) on certain items in the house. Now, make sure your dog is wearing his dog training collar and leash, and get ready to supervise. If your dog is like most dogs he will quickly smell out the delicious smeared foods and go to lick them.

The second he licks the peanut butter grab the leash and give several strong corrections while telling him “No”.

He may not understand why he is being corrected so allow him to try to go after the peanut butter again. If he does, repeat the corrections. Then lead him around the house to all the different areas where you have smeared the peanut butter. You will soon find that his association has changed. The idea of chewing these items, even with food on them, has such a negative feel to it that it can curb the problem quickly.

Some dogs will get pretty clever and realize that they can’t chew when you are around, but the second you leave the house, chewing is fair game. You must out-clever your clever dog. Make him believe that you have left the house but spy on him through the window with your items properly smeared with food. The second he goes to chew, burst in the door, grab the leash, and give several strong corrections. If you do this properly your dog will soon believe that you are omnipotent, and it is better to not chew because who knows where mom or dad may be lurking.

Important: Your dog must be corrected for even licking the ‘baited’ furniture or shoes. It doesn’t matter that he technically isn’t chewing, just the act of him putting his mouth on your stuff is reason enough to correct him.

Be consistent. Be patient. Be clever. Do these things and you will soon be rid of this dog behavior problem.

Serious answers only! How do I keep my dog from running?

My red/brown husky keeps running away when he gets loose from the chain outside we tie him to to keep him from running when "do his business". The chain is heavy (but he seems to be fine with it) and we hook it to his collar. Somehow, whether it's unhooking the chain, getting his collar off, or somehow breaking the chain, he gets away and it takes us hours to catch him. This is like the 70th time this week and we've gotten to the point where if he runs, we wait until he's close enough to the house to catch him. PLEASE HELP!!!! Serious answers will be accepted, all other will be reported.
I walk him everyday, I don't have a fence and have no intention of getting one, he always runs around the neighborhood and into my creek, I'm not taking him to obidience class because I don't have enough money, and my parents won't give me any (as far as I know) and last this is a dog that can get shocked by barbed wire while eating chocolate cake and not get hurt or killed.

Find out how he gets out and fix it. For example, if he jumps the fence, get a taller one. If he digs under it, get a new one put in that goes deeper underground. If you don't have a fence, get one. Also try moving chairs or other things away from the fence that he could possibly be using to help get over. There's also chains out there with better clips that he won't be able to get undone.
