Unique Faberge Eggs

Faberge Eggs have always been special to me.  I’ve been searching them out at art auctions since I was in my early twenties.  I did a term paper on the Faberge Company and their history of making eggs for the Russian Tsars between 1885 and 1917.

The first Faberge Egg that I ever found at an art auction was actually quite by chance.  The Faberge Egg was not one of the advertised items and was actually a bottle topper.  I instantly fell in love with it and took it home from the art auction for one hundred dollars.

I saw an advertisement for a tropical Faberge Egg from a collection St. Petersburg.  It was set to be up for sale at an art auction in New York City.  I knew that I was going to be unable to purchase it, but I wanted to see it in person and at least put in one of the lower bids.

The tropical Faberge Egg at that art auction in New York City ended up selling for over six thousand dollars.  That is out of my price range, but I was happy just to have been in the same room with this masterpiece.  The eggs themselves are just exciting to be near.

The first Faberge Egg was made in 1885.  I know that it will never turn up in an art auction, but hopefully I will see it someday in an exhibit.  The first one was commissioned by Tsar Alexander III and was given to his wife as an Easter present.  The surprise inside the egg was a golden hen in a golden yolk.  The hen was wearing a tiny crown with a ruby hanging inside.

The antique Russian Faberge Egg that I found at an art auction recently was so detailed.  The silver enamel egg has rubies and eagles and is marked with Faberge hallmarks.  I was able to win this egg because I was bidding with someone else’s money.  The best eggs always end up with the richest people.

The piece that I want in my collection is a genuine Lillies of the Valley Faberge Egg.  I found one at an art auction I went to ten years ago.  I was unable to buy the one I saw, because I didn’t have the money at the time.  I’ve been saving for the time that I see another one.

The Lillies of the Valley Faberge Egg is covered with pearls and pale pink enamel.  The egg is on a stand that has legs of matte green-gold leaves with rose dewdrops. The gold-stemmed lilies of the valley have green enamelled leaves and pearl flowers. I will look for this egg at every art auction I ever attend.

This Faberge Egg is delightful.  It is surmounted by an Imperial crown of rose crystals.  There is a pearl knob that reveals the surprise of this egg.  The surprise is portrait miniatures of Czar Nicholas II and his two oldest daughters.  The portraits are framed in rose crystals and backed with gold panels.  I have heard a rumor that one will be at an art auction next year in Miami.

The last art auction I attended I purchased a Faberge Egg called the Imperial Clover Egg.  It was for my personal collection and I won it for under a thousand dollars.  I felt like it was quite a steal at that price.

The Imperial Clover Faberge Egg was originally made with a four leaf clover inside of it that had portraits of the four daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra.  The portraits went missing during the Russian Revolution.  The egg that I bought at the art auction had a stem of clovers standing upright.  Two clovers in green enamel and the third, a four leaf clover, was done in diamonds.  The diamond four leaf clover is a pin that can be worn.

Discovering Famous Kauai Historical Sites

There is an abundance of Kauai historical sites since the island is over 5 million years old and is the oldest in all of Hawaii. Several explorers from Polynesia, Europe and America have already visited the island over several centuries so some structures and places have a legend to tell. Find out more about Hawaiian culture, history and tradition and unveil the secrets to some of Kauai's treasures.

Built on Belief

There used to be several bellstones located all over the different islands of Hawaii. These were struck at a specific point to resonate a unique tone that can be heard from distance locations. The bellstone is rung to inform people from nearby villages and islands of a special event such as a royal birth.

The bellstone at Highway 580, Wailua, East Kauai is found downhill from two big boulders that were specifically placed to calibrate the Hawaiian calendars according to the winter and summer solstices. To reach the bellstone, go to Mile Marker #1 on Highway 580 or Kuamo'o Road until you reach the dirt road leading to the ocean. Follow the path until you reach the two big boulders. The Kauai historical site is 100 feet from the guardrail. It is illegal to move or deface any of the two boulders.

The Captain James Cook Monument is located at Hofgard Park, Waimea, West Kauai. It was erected in memory of the British sailor who influenced a lot of Hawaii's history when he reached the Waimea Harbor in 1778. He led 2 ships namely Resolution and Discovery and is considered to be the pioneering westerner to ever set foot on Kauai. The Captain however, was killed by local villagers over a small rowboat dispute. The original monument can be found in the sailor's hometown in Whitby, England.

Several bridges served important roles for many important Hawaiian villagers and events. Try visiting Hanalei Bridge at Highway 560, North Kauai. Vehicles can actually pass through the bridge since it has a 15-ton weight capacity.

The single lane requires all vehicles on one side to cross first followed by others on the opposite side. Hanapepe Swinging Bridge is located at Highway 50, South Kauai which is a foot bridge rebuilt after the 1992 hurricane destroyed the original one. Kauai historical sites include a lot of temples or heiaus such as Holoholoku Heiau, Malae Heiau, Napali Coast Heiau and Hikinaakala Heiau.

Famous Historical Landmarks

The Kilauea Lighthouse is located at the northernmost tip of the major Hawaiian islands. It was built in 1913 and used to have the largest lens of its kind guiding ships to and from the Orient. It stopped guiding ships in 1970 but still serves as popular tourist location. The lighthouse is also near the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge so people actually come to witness some rare birds and marine species.

Fort Elizabeth in Waimea, Southwest Kauai was built by the Russian doctor George Scheffer with the help of King Kaumuali'i in 1816. The original purpose for building the fort was not realized when Scheffer was brought back to Russia. King Kamehameha gained control of it afterwards.

Another natural Kauai historical site is Sleeping Giant in Kapaa, East Kauai. This is a Nounou Mountain ridge that has a very similar appearance to a sleeping giant. Invaders were warded off by Kauai villagers by lighting fires behind the mountain which illuminated the figure. Hiking trails that lead up the mountain are available for tourists.

The best performing dogs and cats have been started early and constantly praised for their efforts. Animals vary in personality so do not fear if the dog or cat doesn't learn right away. Be patient and loving with your animal. If the pet does not learn after many weeks of training, something could be wrong. It might be a behavioral or medical problem. Check with your animal's vet if you become concerned.

Kittens can be litter trained any time after 4 weeks. If the kitten is still around its mother, set up a smaller litter box next to the mother's larger litter box. The cat will learn by watching and eventually start using it as well. If the cat does not have its mother to draw an example from, or it is still not learning to use the little box as it gets older, you have a little more work to do, but do not be alarmed. All animals vary on their learning abilities. Try putting the cat and its litter box in a small room such as a bathroom or laundry room, with food and water. Check every hour to see if the cat has used the box correctly. Do this one more time until the cat has used the litter box again correctly, then praise the cat, and remove its supplies back into the rest of the house. Place the litter box where you would like then show the cat where it is located. Always make sure the litter box is clean because cats have a tendency to not use a litter box if it is constantly dirty. Clean the box once a day in order to avoid this.

Anywhere from 5 to 8 weeks is acceptable to start potty training a puppy. As soon as a puppy can start going outside, do so. Take the dog out after eating, playing, and waking up and show it an area where it is acceptable to go. Also, pay attention to what the puppy does inside. If the puppy is sniffing around the house, take the dog to its spot outside. Pee-pads are also acceptable if you have a very young or small dog, but training a dog to do its business outside is always less messy.

Talk to the dog whenever you take it out. Phrases like "Let's go outside" or "Let's go potty" said excitedly will eventually be learned by the dog. When the dog finally does do its business outside, praise him or her immensely. Give the dog treats and a lot of attention. After the dog is potty trained, obedience training can begin via at home or dog training classes at your local humane society or local pet stores like Petsmart or PetCo.

* Exercising your older dog will protect your dog from the loss of muscle tone and mass. Ramps, elevated feeders, and orthopedic beds will also help maintain your dogs muscles.

* Attend to your dog's dental needs. Many older dogs develop dental disease, so it is a good idea to regularly brush your dogs teeth and have them professionally cleaned when your veterinarian recommends it.

* Dietary supplements such as glucosamine adn chondroitin can aid with arthritis and help yoru dog maintain optimal health.

* Keep in mind that coat changes and graying can occur in older dogs. If your dogs coat changes dramatically, have him checked out by your veterinarian as this can be a sign of serious diseases. Regular brushing will help keep your dogs coat shiny, as it increases oil production.

* Older dogs become more sensitive to the weather. Have your dog wear a coat or sweater when going outdoors in winter, and keep your dog indoors during the summer months.

* Keep your dog happy! Remember to include your dog in whatever activities you can.

Winter coat for Pit Bull?

I am looking for a good quality, tough blanket/coat/sweater for my very active 7 month old pit bull female, who will be growing considerably in the next few months. Pitties are short hair dogs and I live in the northeast. I have mostly seen "cutie" clothes for little dogs, but no hard core weatherbeater gear for good old dirty dogs! Does anyone have any experience of invisible dog fencing to keep my dog from ruining my lawn.?

Last April I rehomed a gorgeous 5 year old Brown Female Lab but the problem is after she has relieved herself she then scratches and she is destroying my lawn. The options are a low level fence all around the area I wish to keep her off, which won't look very nice or a radio controlled invisible fence which I have seen on the internet. It looks good, if the dog gets near the wire, which is buried in the ground it gets a warning beep (it wears a special collar) and if it ignores it it gets a gentle shock. Anyone used one these and do they work. Sensible answers only please.

But my dog and I have been attacked twice (one by an Irish Setter, another by a Lab) that ran through an invisible fence. Saw another instance where a smaller dog (a mixed cocker-lab) continually ran through her invisible fence. So it's not fool proof.

Here's another suggestion: it sounds like the problem is that your lab scratches (ie: cleans her feet) after defacating/peeing and is wiping out your lawn--train her to not scratch the feet. It's always hard to train a dog to NOT do something so what you're really trying to get her to do is to do a substitute behavior. Maybe she pees and then runs in a quick circle. Or she pees and then shakes her head and walks away. I suspect once you interrupt the habit (pee and scratch ground) you'll be fine.

The other option could be scenting a particular area so that it just cries out for your dog to relieve herself there.
