Basic Steps Involved In Building A Dog House

If you have been thinking about building a dog house, researching and having plans to follow will be very helpful. This project is not that difficult, and can usually be completed in just one weekend for most do-it-yourself ers. By building it yourself you will be able to modify and customize it the way you like.

Providing a house for your dog will protect him from the rain, wind, and cold temperatures, however if temperatures get extremely cold it is recommended you provide a place with moderate temperatures, such as indoors or garage.

When you build or buy a dog house, make sure you get one that will accommodate your pet comfortably. Make sure it is big enough for the dog to turn and lay down comfortably. Also be aware if it is to big, body heat will be lost during cold weather. One way to get an idea of the size you will need is by measuring the dogs width and length.

Basic Steps to build a Dog House

1. Begin by building the foundation. Assemble the foundation frame. The foundation base can be built with 2x4 pressure treated lumber. Next cut a piece of plywood the size of the frame, nail or screw two inch nails or screws through the plywood and into the frame.

2. Assemble and screw the side wall frames into the floor. The wall frame can be constructed with 2x2 lumber. Measure and cut top and bottom plates for both sides. Cut the wall studs, cut as many studs needed, and place about 16" apart. Nail or screw through the top and bottom plates and into the wall studs. Next cut and assemble the front and back wall frames, position between the side wall, nail or screw into the floor.

3. Measure and cut the plywood siding and nail or screw into the wall studs. Cut the door on the front siding. The door size will be determined by the size of your dog.

4. The roof frame can be built using 2x2 lumber. Cut a 2x2 ridge and the rafters. Screw the rafters into the wall top plates and the ridge. Next cut out plywood for the roof top. The plywood should exceed the frame at least three inches to give it an overhang.

5. You can install trim to give it a nicer appearance. Shingle the roof decking. Sand rough areas around the door. Paint or stain to complete the dog house.

There are many different type of dog house designs. The two most common and easiest to build are the gable roof and the sloped roof. The sloped roof will give your dog an area on top of the roof to lay. If the roof will be used to lay on, use plywood for the roof, you will not want to shingle, shingles tend to get extremely hot during the summer.

You can find free dog house plans by searching the net. You will notice that there are many different ways to build them. For best results, it is a good to research and have plans to follow when building it yourself.

My dog loves to walk. Yesterday, we started out in a light sprinkle. A block down it began to sprinkle harder. Another block away, it was a light rain. Not cold rain, just a pleasant rain. We were having such a nice time, that we stayed in the rain for another block and turned around. Is it harmful to walk a dog in light rain?

Choke Chain Collar

Pinch Collar vs Choke Chain?

Dog owners or Professional Dog Handlers/Breeders, please give me your insight on pinch collars. Would you recommend a pinch or choke chain?
I have 2 German Sheppard/Rotti mix, male 95lbs & female 67lbs, litter mates, 2 1/2yrs old.
Female pulls all the time, tried everything but pinch or choke. The gentle leader didn't work for us...not enjoying walks with her anymore. Even tried to use I think its called a doubler, big ring that has 2 leads that attaches to one leash. Male was able to counteract her pulling by making her stay in step with him.
So now, I am to the point where I am walking them at different times, seperately. When she starts to pull, I stop and tell her no pull. When we start walking again, she will do good for about a minute then she is pulling again. So maybe a pinch or choke will be the last attempt to resolve her pulling. Please serious answers only!

For obedience/teaching not to pull, I prefer the "pinch" (prong) collar to the choke collar.

1. Even pressure around the neck, rather than uneven tightening over the throat.
2. Very little pressure required to make your point. The dog usually corrects itself.
3. Great for dogs with thick coats, as the blunt prongs get through the coat rather than lying on top.

You need to find someone who can help you properly fit the collar (the 18 year old at the local PetsMart may not be the right person -- a local dog trainer (private or dog training club member) -- would be a better choice). If the prong collar is too loose, it won't do much good. It should fit high on the dog's neck, and not slide.

If it comes to a choice between getting a prong and not walking/enjoying time with your dog, this is a no-brainer. Once your dog understands what you're asking, you will have to rely less on the collar. Again, a good trainer can help you make this transition.

Take Those Little Extra Things Camping

We all like to be comfortable and have everything required when we go camping and take those little extra things to make a difference. Here is some ideas that may help, use this list  as a guide. Probably you are taking some of these items already. There maybe something on this list that you will find useful. and add it to your camping kit for next time.

Tarp & rope for sun, wind or rain protection

Binoculars   Compass (so there is no debate about which way is N S E W)

Hand towel   Chux   Disposable wipes   Paper towel

Collapsible bucket instead of taking a plastic bucket

Small mirror   Travel clock   Radio

Small shovel for moving hot coals or digging eg. bush toilet

Small rake for clearing camping site

Toiletries - everyone has own bag, toothpaste, shampoos etc

Toilet paper - not always available at campsites

Heat proof glove or thick towel for removing cooking pots from campfire

Campfire hook for moving campoven or pots - can be made easily by getting a strong metal tent peg and taping the straight end tightly onto a straight stick, have the stick as short or long as you want it

Card games like Uno, board games etc

Glow sticks for kids to play with at night

Screen Tent to be able to get away from pesty flys while eating

Sun hat and a hat for warmth

Insect repellent for yourself or surface spray for outside areas

Stubby holders (also good for protecting breakables)

A large strong metal bucket or similar filled with water put next to the campfire and you will always have warm water for washing.

A good thing to do is to keep as much of your camping equipment together at home, so it is much easier each time you prepare to go camping. Each time you go camping add something to your camping kit, so you are not using your everyday items from your home  eg.  go to a bargain shop and buy some cheap cutlery, plates cups and put them in your camping kit. Over a few years you will have a complete spare of everything ready to go anytime.

How do you get rid of tatami mat mold? Is there any danger from putting western furniture in a tatami room?

I very recently moved to Japan. I had a guitar case sitting on the floor in my room with tatami mats (for just a few days!), and there appears to be what I imagine to be the dreaded tatami mold growing underneath and around it. I've moved the guitar (put it up on a table), how can I get rid of this mold, if that is in fact what it is?

I've been running the air conditioning constantly in that room by the way, and it's actually quite cool, 77-80 degrees F.

Also, since this is my only room with AC, I was keeping my only 2 pieces of furniture in the tatami mat room too, a coffee table and a couch/pullout bed. The couch has short legs that are about 2x2 inches, and the table has 2 posts with small bases on one side and 2 wheels on the other. Could these pieces of furniture damage my mats, or will they be okay as long as I put some kind of protective padding under the legs?

The western furniture should be fine as long as you keep pads under the feet. If you have anything particularly heavy you might want to check on it every once in a while to see if it's leaving a mark, but many people I know keep permanent furniture items in their tatami rooms.

As for the mold, I've never had that particular problem with tatami (though I was surprised to find mold on my laptop case today.... it's been in a completely ventilated place the past 2 weeks) but I've heard that using plain distilled white vinegar, diluted in water should work. Try sponging it on the tatami (very lightly, wet tatami = bad), then allow it to dry and it should kill most of the mold. (I hear)
