Tips on Starting Off Your Maltese Puppy Training at Home

Even if you have never owned a dog, the Maltese breed makes pet ownership a joy. These intelligent dogs are friendly, sociable and easy to train. With their intelligence and personality, there is no doubt that they are so popular.

One of the delightful things about this breed is that they are incredibly easy to train. These puppies are willing to learn whatever that you are teaching. If you have never had a dog, or perhaps just discovered this dog breed, here are a few tricks that you can apply in your Maltese puppy training.

Puppy Proofing

In order to reduce the stress that puppy training can cause, do things the easy way. Before you bring your new Maltese puppy home, you will want to puppy proof, much like you would do for a toddler. Since your dog will be curious, make sure that you have put everything dangerous or irreplaceable away from your puppy's reach. It will make training much easier if you have to spend less time correcting your dog.

You can spray Bitter Apple (a chewing deterrent available for dogs) on furniture legs and other potential chewing posts.

Make sure that your puppy has his own basket of "good" toys. Maltese are very smart, and will become protective over favorite toys. You can even teach them to clean up at the end of the night and put their toys away.

Puppy Potty Training

Your puppy's housebreaking should progress smoothly, as long as you keep your puppy on a schedule. When puppy potty training, your Maltese should be taken out the very first thing in the morning and last thing at night. You should also take them out after meals and after nap time.

You can also train your puppy to use puppy pads. Since many Maltese are apartment dwellers, they will often use the pads throughout their life, and not just during their puppy training.

When you are away from your dogs, keep them in a crate large enough to turn around in. Dogs are den animals, and being in a crate replicates being in a cave or den. Your dog will feel secure, and is much less likely to have an accident when in fairly confined quarters.

Don't punish your dogs when they do have an accident. Be persistent, and your little dog will catch on. Remember that when a puppy isn't housetrained, it is a human error - not a dog's mistake.

Puppy's Behaviors at Home

From the first day, decide what is acceptable from your Maltese. For example, if you don't want a dog that begs from the table, or one that jumps on company, you must start with the first day home. With consistency, your dog will become a well behaved companion that you will enjoy for many years.

When puppy training your dog, use quick and strong "shh..." sound in stead of "No" to mark for undesirable behaviors will be more effective. The reason is the word "No" is always in use in your daily conversation. Don't forget to give plenty of praises for the good behavior as dogs will always learn better with positive reinforcements.

hello, I am getting a puppy as you can see from my picture and username. I just bought puppy pads from petsmart and was wondering how to fit them into the housetraing routine. I will ask 2 other questions soon about another thing i need. I will get my puppy in 3 weeks .

Playtime for a Sun Conure Parrot

A Sun Conure parrot's playtime is comical, to say the least. It loves its owners, and it loves to entertain them. Given a multitude of toys and a swing or two, the Sun Conure parrot will swing, jump, climb, and call out to you as he shows everything he can do. Even without toys, the Sun Conure parrot will develop its own tricks, just to play. It has a very high energy level, and sometimes appears to be a bundle of golden perpetual motion.

Appropriate Toys for a Sun Conure Parrot

Sun Conure parrots enjoy chewing aggressively, and will need several wooden toys to destroy. They will destroy them, too, reducing a medium-sized wooden toy to bits and pieces in a few hours. They are not as eager to play with puzzle toys, probably because they have so much energy to harness. Provide toys that call for activity and "letting off steam" and they will be happy.

Sun Conure parrots enjoy chains, ropes, and other things from which to swing. They love loud bells, but be sure you do, since a Sun Conure parrot will ring it incessantly at times. Rotate the toys every couple of weeks so that your bird will not become bored.

Appropriate Cage for a Sun Conure Parrot

Sun Conure parrots need room to fly around and use up their surplus energy. A website that recommends bird cages according to the size of the parrot, such as Bird Cages, will help you get a large enough cage. Generally, a 20" x 20" cage, about 3 feet high is good for a Sun Conure parrot. The bar spacing should be between 0.75 inches and 1" so that your parrot cannot get its head stuck between the bars. To give your bird proper exercise for its feet, install 3 different perches in the cage, each made of a different substance.

The Sun Conure Parrot's Talking Ability

Generally speaking, most parrots can be taught to talk if the owner follows a proven, consistent course of training. The Sun Conure parrot is not the best talker, however. With patience, you will be able to teach your bird a few words. With care, you will also be able to teach it not to screech for attention. It is common for Sun Conure parrots to screech to greet the day, and to end the day. In between, your bird should learn to be less vocal. Some have found that their Sun Conure parrots like to imitate beeping tones.

Food for a Sun Conure Parrot

The Sun Conure parrot does well on a basic diet of organic pellets. Organic pellets give your Sun Conure parrot a balanced diet in every bite. Avoid seed-based foods, as the parrot will pick out the seeds and leave the rest. The result will be a malnourished parrot.

In addition to organic pellets, give your parrot the variety it craves by providing fresh fruits and vegetables. Sun Conure parrots usually enjoy apples, grapes, melons, and oranges. Among vegetables, they will eat things such as broccoli, carrots, corn, lettuce, and peas. Keep seeds and nuts as a special treat.

A Glimpse on the Various Types of Terrier Dogs

Whatever your dog preference is, you are sure to find terrier dogs among the candidates for a pal. You'll get energy you want with little grooming and added wit.

Basically bred for hunting and killing vermin, Terrier dogs are now known to offer wide spectrum of features and characters that you might find lovable. They are not as cuddly as toy dogs (while there are some terrier dogs in the toy and companion dog brackets) and they may not be as intelligent like other breeds but they set off these lacks with various things that only they can offer.

Let us discuss in brief some of the terrier dog types that you may find interesting:

Less aggressive but definitely not timid. This best describes Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. They are definitely alert and very spirited, but when the call for steadiness arrives, they are sure to show you some air of confidence and steady disposition.

This dog type too is gifted with intelligence which makes them very responsive with obedience training.

Parson Russell Terrier is a dog type that exhibits boldness, cleverness, affection and exuberant disposition. While many may find this a playful pal, it is still not advisable for everyone to take Parson Russell home. In fact, formal obedience training is a must for owners since this dog type is more likely to display mischievousness and too much playfulness that make this a very independent pet. For people with active lifestyles and those who can tolerate explorative disposition, this scamp is the best for you.

The Norwich Terrier, on the other hand, is a type of dog that resulted from breeding small Terriers with other smaller breeds, possibly Yorkshire Terriers. Maintenance of Norwich Terrier is minimal and they are content with modest living quarters. They have active disposition though and can be affectionate and fearless. Additionally, they are also known to display stocky and happy personalities which make them ideal pals.

Much like the Norwich Terriers, Norfolk Terriers are also well-spirited, fearless, charming and always ready for game. While both may have some similar physical characteristics, Norfolks can still be distinguished through their folds in the ears.

Basically workman-like dogs, Kerry Blue Terriers are excellent watchdogs and work well in farm settings. This dog got its name from its blue-shade coat color which was originally black during puppyhood.

Wire Fox Terriers are of great interest since they display power through its excellent endurance capabilities and speed. Alertness and quick movements are the dominant expressions of this dog type. It is advisable though that the owner trains this dog and should be given enough doses of daily exercises.

Meanwhile, Smooth Fox Terriers are the frolic and lively types of dogs that are ideal in both country and city living. Displaying intelligence and cleverness, this dog makes good trainees and must be well credited by that. They are also likely to show great affection towards their owners.

These are just some of the many terrier dog types that can be considered as your next pets. In general, this dog type has good dispositions and makes ideal home pets. Not too sure which type of dog to buy? This is part 2 of 3 articles that addresses the different needs and characteristics of some of the popular dogs. Look out for my other 2 articles 'Dog Breed Characteristics - small dogs' and 'Dog Breed Characteristics - large dogs'.

Bulldog

This is a commonly misunderstood dog. Although its name and appearance (and those cartoons that depict fierce bulldogs) suggest that it is not-so-friendly, it is generally friendly and docile. Due to this nature, they get along well with children and other dogs. They love attention and are really loyal creatures. They can also be easily trained. They need daily exericse and overweight bulldogs can lead to health problems related to the heart and lungs. Interestingly, it was used in the 1600s for bullbaiting, but has since lost its aggressiveness after the sport was outlawed.

Dalmatian

This is probably one of the most filmed breed (think 101 and you get what I mean) and you cannot miss it with its trademark white coat with black spots. It is believed to be one of the oldest breed around and they are generally free from illness. They usually get sick with old age. Note that Dalmatians are dogs with lots of energy and they require frequent exercise. You should not buy a Dalmatian if you do not have the time to take care of it.

Siberian Husky

Originated from Siberia, it has a thick-furry coat and tail. It looks very much like its ancestor, the wolf. They are known to howl rather than bark. Because of their intuitive hunting nature, they make good hunting dogs. They are also stubborn creatures and proper obedience training is needed. Siberian Huskies are very intelligent and are therefore popular with dog shows. They are also used in sled dog racing because of their high level of fitness.

Australian Shepherd

It was not originated from Australia as its name suggests, but was brought up on ranches in the United States. It is a popular herding dog, but has slowly made its way into homes due to its obedience and eagerness to please its owners. It is usually a sweet and affectionate dog which is faithful to its owners and is great with children. There are, noticeably, two distinct types of personalities. One is an energetic dog that requires frequent exercise and enjoys doing tricks, while the other enjoys being a couch potato. Due to their herding nature, they bark warnings when they notice anything unusual. Intelligent and good with tricks, they make good pets.

Poodle

They are considered one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. They can be easily recognised with very short hair around the body, except for the head, legs and tail (google for the pictures). Owners can choose to groom their own poodles in any way they like, but I think they look funny though. Poodles are known to be active. They can get bored easily and have been known to create bad mischief. In general, they are eager to please and are easy to train. They make good pets for those families with children.
