Choosing The Right Cockatiel Cage
If you have pet cockatiels, you may have heard that they require special types of cages. You should buy the biggest cage that you can that is suitable for a cockatiel that you can afford. The bigger the cage is, the better it is for your pet. If you have one cockatiel, the minimum size cockatiel cage should be 18 inches across, 18 inches wide and 24 inches high. Keep in mind that this does not include the base of the cage.
There are other things that you should keep in mind when you are selecting your cockatiel cage that include the following:
- Make sure that there is enough room for your cockatiel to move around, stretch its wings and flap its wings. You also need to remember the length of the tail, and it must not drag on the bottom of the cage or be caught in any part of the cage.
- When you are selecting your size for the cockatiel cage, you also need to consider any filling materials that you are going to be putting in the cage, as this will reduce the overall size of the cage and the size of room that your cockatiel has to move around.
- Check the width of the bars on the cockatiel cage and do not buy a cage that has wide enough bars for the cockatiel to be able to get out.
- Have a cage that is big enough for the cockatiel to be able to move around and climb in its cage. This means that the cage should have horizontal bars and you should not buy a cage that has only vertical bars.
- Choose a cockatiel cage that has a plastic removable tray at the bottom, which makes it easier to keep the cage clean at all times. The tray makes it more easy to access the entire bottom of the cage to clean.
Buying the best cockatiel cage is important to make sure that your pet has enough room to move around enough, and to perch when it wants. When you go to select your cage, make sure that you have the proper measurements of your cockatiel and to check the overall dimensions of the cage. Check that there is going to be enough room for your cockatiel and that there is plenty of space where it will not try to get through the bars of the cage. The right cage can make it a lot more comfortable for your cockatiel, and it can make it easier to clean and take care of the cage on a regular basis. I keep finding eggs at the bottom of my cockatiel cage even though there is a nesting box. What can I do?
I have had a pair of cockatiels for about 8 months and they have started mating. I have put in a nesting box and I have provided nesting material (string, paper and cotton). And for the last 10 days I have found a new egg laying at the bottom of the cage. I remove them everyday (they are usually broken from the fall I think) After the first week I moved the box to the bottom of the cage to see if it would make a difference but I continue to find an egg on the bottom. I have placed the box back at the top of the cage and have put them outside during the day because of the weather being warmer. What can I do to help them to have baby chicks?
Cockatiels frighten easily. It is possible that something outside is causing the birds to knock the egg out of the nest.
Another theory, if you are moving the cage in and out of the house everyday, is that they are restless and are having problems settling down.
Put a towel on the floor of the cage. This may help with the egg falling out or if she is laying the egg there.
My Cockatiels do not use nesting material. She may not be interested in the box because of it. It could also be the reason that the egg is falling out. If their foot gets caught in the stuff it could wing the egg out.
If you get an egg that is not broken, put it into the EMPTY nest box.
Also, Cockatiels will only lay an egg every other day. If you are getting eggs every day, you have more than one female in the cage.
