dog will not recall!?
I am so annoyed with my dog. He had excellent recall up until one month ago. Now it is appalling. He is a 10 month old German Shepherd Male. I used to love taking him to remote areas late at night and running him. He always recalled. Now as soon as I release him he looks for the first distraction to run off like crazy and disappear and not recall. I am so pissed at him. He is ruining an experience I used to really enjoy. I dont know what to do with him. I am really disgusted with him at the minute. What can I do? I cant afford to pay £200 on a shock collar. Conventional training is failing
I would redo every thing that i worked on. Sometimes it takes up to 1000 recurrences till the a dog finally got a command 100%. Seven month is a tough age, its puberty and dogs that age especially males usually question everything they have learned till then.
But it is also important that u stay calm and not show him ur anger and disgust, because it will keep him from coming back if all that awaits him is a mad owner. As hard as it can be sometimes (im speaking out of experience) u gotta always welcome him back with open arms. In addition i would take treats with me and try to keep him with me by bribing him. Change the amount of treats that u give him after a while, at the beginning give him one for every time that he comes back after a while just for the second time...and so on so on. Usually the chance of getting a reward for right behaviour keeps dogs around. I also wouldnt walk him at night time for a while, because u are not able to track where he is going at all times. And for him it doesnt necessarily mean to come back when u yell at him. In wild dog packs barking at each other is more of an assurance that everybody is still around and u can continue what u are doing because the rest of the pack is still around. Most dogs interpret their owners yelling as the assurance that they are still there and everything is ok. Walk him during daytime on 30ft leash and change direction everytime he gets distracted by other stuff, that way he learns that if he doesnt pay attention to u he doesnt get his way.
