Seat Belt Use and Traumatic Brain Injury

Because traumatic brain injuries cannot be cured in the traditional sense, preventive measures are the best weapons against them. And because the number-one cause of traumatic brain injuries among Americans who are less than 75 years old is auto accidents, one of the best ways to prevent a traumatic brain injury is to always use a seat belt. Seat belts have consistently been shown to dramatically reduce deaths and injuries in auto accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that of those who were involved in fatal crashes in 2001, 73 percent who were wearing seat belts and 44 percent who were not wearing seat belts survived. And one 1997 study of traumatic brain injury patients in 14 states showed that 46 percent of the patients whose injuries were caused by motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts

Why Wear A Seat Belt?

In the United States, only one state, New Hampshire, does not require adults to wear a seat belt. Many other states make exceptions to their seat belt requirements for children under a certain age, or for those sitting in the back seat of the car. While some Americans believe that using seat belts can actually increase a driver or passenger's risk of traumatic brain injury, because the head is not restrained with the body, there is no evidence to support this theory and some evidence against it.

Similarly, some argue that seat belts make users less safe by trapping them in the car in case of an accident, rather than allowing them to be thrown clear. However, the NHTSA notes that in 2001, 75 percent of those who were completely ejected from a car during an accident were killed. One percent of those were using a seat belt.

Seat Belt Use and Costs of Traumatic Brain Injury

Not only can declining to use a seat belt increase the severity of an injury, but it also drives up the cost of treating that injury. In a six-year study, the government of Maine found that those who did not use a seat belt had longer hospital stays and higher bills than those who did use a seat belt. During that period, the study reported, 850 hospitalizations, with a cost of $17 million, could have been avoided altogether if the patient had been wearing a seat belt.

Unbelted victims were more than twice as likely to be hospitalized or die from a head injury. And the crash victims who were ejected from their vehicles were 41 times more likely to sustain a serious or fatal brain injury than those who were not.

Proper Use of Seat Belts Can Reduce Risk of TBI

While seat belts can help prevent a traumatic brain injury, their effectiveness decreases when they are not used properly. Seat belts must be tightened to fit the individual using them. Two or more people cannot safely use the same seat belt. If the seat belt is old or frayed, it is not safe and should be replaced. And adults should ensure that children who are under 4'9" and about 80 pounds use the special equipment they need to be safe.

Infants and children under 40 pounds need a properly sized, properly belted car seat; older children should use a booster seat until they are big enough to use adult-sized lap and shoulder belts. There is also mounting evidence that children shorter than 4'9" should not ride in the front seat at all, due to the risk of injury from passenger-side air bags.

How Cars Have Changed Throughout the Years

In this article we'll take a very close look at how cars have changed throughout the years. Perhaps the most important aspect that has changed is the improved safety standards. Well with cars now having up to 8 airbags and seatbelts, it is very much evident that they are indeed much safer indeed!

Modern cars nowadays provide a huge, wide range of safety features that include standard equipment available in even the most base models. In fact, the more safety features you have installed in your car, the more likely you are to save on insurance costs and charges!

AIR BAGS

This is by far the most necessary features for surviving any type of crash. Air bags are perfectly designed to protect the driver's and occupants faces and heads from striking the hard surface interior parts of the vehicle. While considered very effective, air bags, in head on collisions can deploy in less than 1/20th of a second! Protection is even more enhanced of course, when the occupants us their safety seat belts. And seat belts do work! You can ask anyone that's been in any type of car crash and you'll see that they are indeed very valuable in providing safety in the most highest of levels!

In the past, airbag systems were often considered to be harmful, especially for children who sit in the front passenger side seat. This was remedied by making the enforcement of the airbags themselves less forceful, while still not reducing their effectiveness. They are in fact, still safe as ever, even with this lower forceful impact. As a general rule of thumb, parents should always keep their kids in the back seat, as this is by far, the safest possible place to keep any child.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKES

Often times when a car brakes, the actual brakes themselves may lock up, causing a frictional skidding of the car that may prove to be very unsafe. To prevent this, anti-lock brakes were invented. Typically, with standard anti-lock brakes, just a gently pressing of the brakes may be necessary, however, there are some anti-lock braking systems that might require more hard breaking in certain situations.

THE ACTUAL SIZE OF THE CAR

Bigger, larger cars often provide more protection for passengers, whereas smaller cars provide less protection. Unfortunately, the occupants of a small vehicle might be more injured or even severely injured, as a result of a crash rather than occupants in larger vehicles.

SAFETY BELTS

Pretty much every single vehicle sold today provide either manual or automatic seat belts. It would be very wise for both the drivers and the passengers to always make full use of these safety restraints, to prevent injury in crashes, even little crashes. However, the best protection in this case is assured by a combination of lap and shoulder belt restraint.

Many vehicles nowadays also offer standard head restraints. These often times will help the passengers head from snapping back and forth in the actual even of a crash. Most vehicles have these restraints for passengers sitting in the rear area seats also. For better performance of these restraints, the actual head restraints should be positioned in accordance to the persons height, etc.

So as we can see from here, technology has really advanced. Cars of the beginning of car manufacturing cannot compare to the cars of today in terms of safety, etc.

Why is it illegal for someone not to wear a seat belt but motorcyclists don't have to wear one or a helmet?

Why can you get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt in a car but a motorcyclist doesn't get a ticket for not wearing one or aren't required to wear helmets? They are more at risk for getting harmed in an accident.

Seat belts are a proven life saver. My family has been using seat belts in automobiles since the mid 1950's. No educated person doubts the effectiveness of seat belts in saving lives. No one of reasonable inteligence who values their life would ride without a seatbelt. Which means that the majority don't bother. The meddling do-gooders hence made it a law that you have to wear seat belts.

Personally I think it should be optional. The people that would die are of little use to society and easily replaced.

On the other hand, motorcycle helmets have not been show to be effective in saving lives. The States that have mandatory helmet usage has an insignificantly higher death rate per motorcycle accident.

While a motrocyclist will be injured in a collision, for any given person the risk of a collision is significantly lower on a motorcycle than in a car. I would rather avoid a collision on a bike than survive the collision in a car.

A Quick Look At Model Train Sets

There are probably as many model train sets as there are different kinds of trains. It is not hard to find them online, or at your local hobby shop. From exact replicas of antique locomotives, fancy, futuristic mono rail trains, and just about everything in between.

Many of these sets not only include the engine, cars, tracks on transformers, but also all the scenery and buildings you will need to start a basic layout. One very unique and cool model train sets is called the New Bright Sleigh Bell Holiday Express G.

This set is decorated in bright holiday colors, and includes the engine and coal car, a passenger car and caboose. It also has 75 individual lights, plays Christmas songs, and has the sound of a bell or whistle.

It includes a water tower, 12 curved and 8 straight tracks, the transformer which can easily power all this set has to offer. Other New Bright add on cars will NOT fit this set, however there are more Holiday Express accessory cars available.

While the transformer will power up to 80 feet of track, if you decide to purchase the optional musical clock tower, you may not have enough power to run all of it at the same time. While this unique set lists as much as $235, it can be found in many places for well under $200.

Another of the popular model train sets is the Bachmann Digital commander Deluxe HO Set, model number 00501. This set has two trains, and includes new DCC On Board technology, that allows you to be able to operate both trains separately, but at the same time.

The exclusive E-Z Command digital control systems gives separate control over speed lighting and the direction of both train. This train set includes both a EMD FT locomotive, (Santa Fe,) and the EMD GP40 (Union Pacific) engine.

One terminal rerailer, 3 freight cars, and a caboose. It also includes enough track to make a 47x38" oval track, and of course the command center, power pack and magnets.

It also includes a DVD E-Z command instruction video, and illustrated manual. While the list price is close to three hundred dollars, may retailers offer this set for well under two hundred.

This is just a small sampling of all that is available for model train sets. This doesn't even include any of the accessories and kits offered.

You have town sets, which there are may varieties, as well as many scenery packs, and even trestle packages, enough to set up a mountain pass layout. If you want other ideas on layout designs, you can easily find videos and photos of many an enthusiasts creations.

It is really only limited by your budget and imagination. There are many communities of model train enthusiasts, and in many areas there are even museums, and shows set up just for model trains.

There are even contests held to see who has the most elaborate model train sets and set up, and it isn't limited to the indoors, and many bigger sets are used in outdoor garden and landscaping settings.

I don't get the attraction of such symbols for people born transsexual. We spend years in transition to correct our birth conditions so that we can just disappear back into society. Why would anyone want to stick out like that unless they are radical out and proud types. A word of caution: Out and proud types don't usually stay that way. They usually end up wanting to disappear like everyone else.

Is Your Child'S Booster Seat In Need Of A Better Fit?

OF IMPROVING SAFETY BELT FIT FOR CHILDREN

Booster seats are meant to elevate children so that safety belts designed for adults are in the right position to restrain kids during a crash. 

Thirteen of the 41 belt-positioning booster seats the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety evaluated with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute last October did such a poor job of improving the fit of lap and shoulder belts for children that the Institute doesn't recommend them at all. 

Ten models are best bets and 5 are good bets. These evaluations are the first to tell consumers how well boosters sold by US retailers improve belt fit for children in cars, minivans, and SUVs. The Institute plans to continue these assessments. 

"We evaluated the safety belt fit boosters provide, not crash protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "This is because unlike child restraints, boosters don't restrain children in crashes. They simply position children so lap and shoulder belts are in the right place to restrain them." Good boosters route belts across a child's bony parts, not soft parts like the abdomen, which is more vulnerable to injury. 

"We'd expect the 10 best bets to improve belt fit for children in almost any car, minivan, or SUV," Lund says. "Likewise, it's clear that kids in the 13 boosters we don't recommend aren't getting the full benefit of improved lap belt fit. These boosters may increase restraint use by making children more comfortable, but they don't position belts for optimal protection." 

Researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute assessed 2 types of boosters, backless and highback, under conditions representing a range of 2001-06 model vehicles. Some highbacks convert to backless, and some boosters, called combination seats, can be used as child restraints. Highback and backless modes were evaluated separately because each mode affects how belts fit. 

More importance was assigned to lap belt fit. All of the best-bet boosters locate this belt on children's upper thighs. The main problem for the boosters that aren't recommended is they leave the lap belt partially or fully on the abdomen. Fit is important because a correctly positioned lap belt loads pelvic bones during a crash, not the abdomen. A good booster also positions the shoulder belt at midshoulder, keeping the webbing away from the neck so it won't chafe and reducing the likelihood that kids will endanger themselves by putting the belt behind their back or under an arm.

"Our data show it's possible to design a booster with good lap and shoulder belt fit," says Matt Reed, the study's lead author and research associate professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. "Boosters that can't do that should be redesigned."

Harry Potter ride controversy?

There was an article the other day about how there is a controversy about one of the Harry Potter rides at the new Universal Studios theme park. There is a seat in the line and you have to be able to fit in the seat and have the safety harness click three times in order to ride. Very heavy individuals cannot fit. What are your thoughts? Some people feel that they should make larger seats and others feel that the really heavy individuals need to accept their limitations. I'm not going to give my opinion yet...

Yeh, that's a stupid article....I mean ALL of the rides at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter have seats that cannot accommodate larger guests (the other 2 coasters have the same needs). I have no problem with this...what are they supposed to do, make larger seats so that smaller people, or average-weight, healthy people cannot ride it because they will be too small and possibly fall out? Come on... Restrains are put there for safety, and they need to be able to protect the person...same goes with any other thrill ride like rollercoasters...they should just take this as a sign that they are at an unhealthy weight and maybe it should be their goal to lose some pounds (and yes, they ARE at an unhealthy weight...a lot of overweight people ARE accommodated on that ride, just not obese people - I had seen and know overweight people who were able to get on the ride). Thousands of people are rejected from taking on rollercoaster or other thrill rides each year...probably even on the other rides at Wizarding World of Harry Potter - this happens all the time - if the restraints cannot safely secure you, then it is not THEIR fault...I mean, why don't people complain about the height requirement? Aren't most Harry Potter fans really young?...and probably too short to ride? There are height requirements and weight (read: body proportion) limitations to certain rides for SAFETY. I feel like large people need to just lose weight if they want to do things like that...it's just a fact of life (I read this article, and the guy who was rejected was not just large, he was obese...). Anyway, they just need to move on to the next story, the only reason why they made an article about it is because it's a new attraction...you don't see articles about how the same person got rejected from the rollercoaster across from the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride.
It's just a fact of life - the ride needs safety restraints, so they need to be used properly. If someone complained about being too short, the same situation would be played out. They would just have to wait until they are at the right height (or in this case weight).
Simple.
