what to do about a fat cat?

my cat is a male, about six to seven yo, and has a brother who is a free feeder meaning he always has food out. The cat eats Iams and he is also a free feeder, both on dry food, the cat tends to eat both foods and he is a very big boy, I would say about twenty or so pounds, his tummy is close to the floor, any ideas on how to get him back on track? I know I can pick up their food but I get worried as I have a hard time keeping weight on the dog so want him to eat any time he is hungry.

The amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of wet food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

Please don’t feed Iams / Eukanuba. It’s ALL fillers, byproducts, animal digest and CRAP. Read the ingredients! There is nothing good for your cat in that food. Let me share with you what I have learned about feline nutrition to help you make an informed decision on what diet you should feed your cats.

Many brands of manufactured cat foods claiming to be "healthy" really are not. In fact they are made of the lowest ingredients possible. I'm not saying that a cat can't live off them... just the same as you could live off hot dogs and Mac and cheese forever, but better choices can and should be made for your feline friends. I would not venture to say that any manufactured food is "best" for a cat but a grain free organic wet food would be a good start. Feeding canned is certainly better than feeding dry in all cases.

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It's completely species inappropriate.

In the wild, cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don't need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. So they do not drink water. Regular ol' house cats have descended from those same wild cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall, wet is a better all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

It is also bogus that kibble cleans teeth. DRY FOOD DOES NOT CLEAN TEETH. It's an old myth that has been scientifically disproved for years, but old-school vets drilled it into people's heads for so long (and sadly still do) that people still believe it. Cats can not “chew”. They do not have chewing teeth. They have meat ripping pointy carnivorous teeth. They do not have molars. They may “crunch” a piece of food once to crack and break it… but they are absolutely unable to chew a hard piece if food. Want your cat to have clean teeth? Give them an appropriately sized raw bone. )

I personally feed a Raw Meat and Bones based diet to my cats and they are very healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it's a snap to prepare. It's something you might want to consider someday. They are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!

If raw is not an option for you please be aware that there are three Categories of Pet Foods:

-"Grocery store" foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. While easy on the pocketbook, "grocery store" foods normally do not provide your cat with the healthiest, most nutrient-dense ingredients.

-Premium foods – (Iams/Eukanuba, Purina One, Hills Science Diet, Nutro and such) Foods often found in grocery stores, pet stores, and veterinarian offices that contain higher-grade ingredients, but still include many elements of "grocery store" food, such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives, and "filler" ingredients such as corn and wheat products, by-products and even animal digest. Yuck! Premium foods are usually more expensive than "grocery store" foods because their ingredients are sometimes of a higher quality, and are therefore somewhat more beneficial and digestible. But don’t be fooled, some of those same so called Premium brands are sometimes worse than grocery store foods, but they charge prices like they are better. They aren’t!

-Healthy foods – (Wellness, Merrick, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster & Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market - provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class contain nutrient-rich ingredients. Formulated to provide optimum health benefits for pets, these foods often use real meat as the primary protein source, carbohydrate-rich whole grains like brown rice and barley and whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. They should not contain artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. They will almost always be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, and will use the best natural sources for fatty acids to help build healthy skin and a beautiful coat. Because healthy foods use high quality ingredients, you should expect to pay a little more than you would for other types of pet food. Remember, though, with healthy foods you can feed less since healthy foods are more nutrient-dense than other types of food so it often evens out or cost’s les than feeding foods filled with cheap non-nutritional by-products fillers.

With all that information in mind, when you are choosing a new cat food, study the ingredients. All ingredients on pet food labels are listed by weight. Meaning whatever ingredients are listed first on the list, there is more in there. The first ingredients listed should be whole meat ingredients, protein sources, such as Chicken or Turkey. NOT just the word “meat”! Who the heck knows what that is? The word Chicken Meal is ok, but it should be a secondary ingredient, not first. Meal is the meat dehydrated and ground into a powder.

The ingredients also should NOT include any by-products or animal digest whatsoever. Those are disgusting left over animal parts that are scraped off the filthy floors of meat and poultry plants. They should just go into the trash but they put them into pet food instead. EW!!!! Also make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors. And make sure there is no BHA and BHT used preservatives. These preservatives have been shown to cause cancer in both cats and dogs. Bad Bad stuff and it’s in almost every cat treat on the market.

So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading, put down that product and move on to the next.

Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you more than cheaper products, just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. This in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy wet foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are better for your cat than cheap crap.

Car Travel Tips For Your Pet

Taking your favorite pet on your next road trip? To make sure it's as pleasant for your pet as it is for you try following these simple pet safety and comfort tips.

No Sticking Their Heads Out The Window: Although most pets will take great enjoyment from spending the entire road trip with their head out the window, it's not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris from the road not to mention other cars. Along this same tip, I hope that it should go without mention that traveling with your pet in the back of the pickup truck is also a definite no-no! Some states even have laws restricting this type of animal transport because it is always dangerous.

Make Frequent Rest Stops: You should always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas and public rest stops will have designated areas for walking your pet. When taking your pets on bathroom breaks or short walks, try to stick to this area, also remembering to bring a bag to pickup any waste. Whenever you are outside your vehicle, make sure to keep your pet on a leash and wearing a collar that has a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Keep Them Hydrated: During your rest stops make sure to provide your pet with some fresh water so that they can re-hydrate themselves. Occasionally, traveling in a car can upset your pet's stomach and keeping them hydrated will work to help prevent any 'accidents.' Another trick is to bring ice cubes for your pet as it's easier than having to bring large amounts of water (plus by the time you're done with the trip it IS just water).

Watch Their Food Intake: It is suggested that you keep feeding to a minimum while traveling. This also means feeding them their regular pet food and not whatever part of your fast-food that you didn't finish. Pets and french fries, burgers or any other sort of fast-food item usually are not a good mix.

Don't Leave Them Stranded: Never leave your pet by themselves in a parked vehicle. On average warm days, the temperature in your car can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even if you have the windows slightly open. Another reason to not leave them in the car is it sometimes can act as an open invitation to pet thieves.

Keep Them Restrained: Make sure that your pet is safely restrained while in your car. Using a pet safety-harness or travel kennel are the easiest ways to keep your pet safe. These will not only protect your pet from harm, but they also help by keeping them from distracting you while you are driving. A pet safety harness acts the same way as a regular seatbelt does. While your typical pet will not find any problems adjusting to it, you may want to let them test it out by wearing the harness by itself a few times before using it in the car. If your dog prefers a travel kennel, make sure that the kennel is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs or other cars with large connected storage areas. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet than in the passenger seat.

Staying Safe and Comfortable: Comfort should be a priority regardless of how you choose to travel with your pets. Just as it's important for your seat to be comfortable on long road trips, your pet's seat should be comfortable too (by seat we mean seating area). Usually your pets favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick to quickly put them at ease. If you don't mind spending the extra money, there are many different pet travel seats available that you can buy which are designed with your pets safety and comfort in mind.

My male aussie has been breaking out of his kennel and urinating on my bed & furniture after a move. Help?

We recently moved into a new house. just when I thought he might be settling in - he started even worse behavior. he has always had a kennel (wire/see through) & seemed to enjoy "his" space. During a recent storm he tore it apart. Afraid he would injure himself, I replaced it with a carrier type( plastic sides) for his confort & saftey. He promptly ripped the door off. He has become obsesive with play time(won't put the frisby down and come in) and now is urinating in the middle of my bed. (not "marking", but saturating) and furniture.
I have tried longer walks & exercise & affection, eventrying "calming" aids from Fosters and Smith. And have not had much luck. He is a family pet & loved very much - but I am out of ideas and at my witts end. Any suggestions? Please help!

I would first consult a veterinarian to make sure that he doesn't have a urinary tract issue. It could be a UTI, stones, etc...that just happened to coincide with your move. My second recommendation would be to consult a licensed behaviourist. He may need some behaviour modification and possibly some anxiety meds.

The History Of Rhinestones

Rhinestones have a glittering past.  Originally rhinestones where referred to Czechoslovakian or Bohemian glass dating as far back as the 13th century in Bohemia and the Czech Republic.  Both have a history steeped in beautiful hand blown glass as well as molded and cut glass.  

By 1918 glass was no longer limited to functional items.  Czechoslovakian glass began to make its appearance in dazzling and brilliant jewelry.  This Czech glass became known as rhinestones.

Rhinestones were manmade gems from highly refined glass.  By using various metals the glass was colored to the desired shade.  It was then pressed into molds.  Each stone was then ground and polished by machine, resulting in a brilliant glass stone.  Often the stones were foiled on the back which increased their brilliance.  

Today, the same refining process is still used.  You will often here rhinestones referred to as paste.   Originally paste was referred to a glass stone that made of ground glass which was molded and then melted, producing an opaque dense glass frosted stone.  Paste had many air bubbles and swirl marks.   The high lead content glass was then polished and faceted, and set on either copper or silver resulting in a brilliant stone.  Today the term paste usually refers to rhinestones.  In Europe rhinestones are often referred to as paste, strass, and diamante.  

Austria is another area with a history in rhinestone production.  In 1891 Daniel Swarovski created a new glass cutting machine which quite literally revolutionized the jewelry business.  This machine could cut faceted glass, producing finely finished product in a very short time.  Prior to this invention it would take a very long time for each stone to be hand cut and finished.  Swarovski's background in glass making, combined with his glass cutting machine soon found him producing rhinestones with a lead content of over 30%.

The brilliance of these rhinestones was superior to anything seen on the market.  Swarovski wasn't content with his invention and the best rhinestones ever seen.  His next invention was once again transforming to the jewelry industry.  He created a vacuum plating for the backs of the stones with silver and gold, reducing the need for hand labor.  Still today Swarovski rhinestones are recognized as the highest quality in the industry.  Over 80% of rhinestone jewelry manufactured in America use Swarovski rhinestones.

Rhinestones have played an important role in costume jewelry for hundreds of years.  It is used to enhance and accent, and sometimes rhinestones will provide the entire design.  During the Victorian period common motifs for jewelry included snakes, flowers, and hands most often adorned with rhinestones.  
The 1890s were a time for extravagant jewelry heavily adorned with rhinestones.  As time moved forward designs became simpler with figural shapes once again making their fashion statement.  However this time they were small and more elegant with small rhinestone accents.  

During the Edwardian period extravagance had made a comeback with diamonds and pearls being the focal point.  Once again rhinestones were in heavy use, often used to imitate the real thing.

During the 1920s fashions were rapidly changing.  Dresses had gone from fitted to a looser more comfortable style.  Two distinct styles occurred during this era - the feminine style and the androgynous style.  Jewelry from the 1920s drew on the art deco period.  The majority of rhinestone jewelry was made with clear rhinestones.  

As the 1920s moved jewelry once again became bolder.  Dramatic color was in style.  Designer Coco Chanel was an integral figure in the setting the stage for jewelry of this era.  

During the 1930s during the depression labor intensive fashion was no longer feasible.  While the world was in turmoil, jewelry represented an affordable comfort to many women.  Inexpensive costume jewelry could be used to revitalize an old outfit.  The industry began to produce bright colored enamel pieces accented with rhinestones.  Dogs, birds, or cats with a rhinestone eye were common place.  

The jewelry during the 1940s once again became big and bold with rhinestones being produced in every imaginable color, large stones set on large bold settings was the norm.  

By the 1950s there were two very distinct looks - elegant and sophisticated for the more mature woman, and casual and fun for the younger woman.  The 1950s saw jewelry made completely from rhinestones.  For the younger woman were flirty pieces, for the older woman sophisticated elegance.  Rhinestone parures became extremely popular.  

In 1953 the aurora borealis rhinestone was introduced to the market with its fabulous array of color.  It was an instant hit!

By 1960s women were wearing very functional clothing.  By the late 1960s the hippie fashions were extremely popular with their roots tied to Mother Nature.  Tie dyed shirts, long flowing skirts, frayed jeans were everywhere.  This generation had no interest in rhinestone jewelry.

By the mid 1970s the punk look had been born and the rhinestone was revitalized.  It was the disco movement brought the rhinestone back to center stage.  The disco movement turned into the club movement during the 1980s and rhinestone jewelry continued to gain popularity.  

Since the 1970s rhinestone have remained main stream in the jewelry world.  They continue to gain popularity and today there is a style to suit almost every ones needs.  There is rhinestone jewelry which is perfect for a bride, rhinestone jewelry for a prom girl, rhinestone jewelry for the young and fun crowd, the business woman, the sophisticated woman, and the mature woman.  Beautiful pieces of rhinestone jewelry adorn almost every woman's accessories.  

If trends are an indication of the rhinestones future, it appears to have a vibrant healthy life ahead of it.  Pleasing for most woman with a fashion sense who instantly recognize the value and beauty of rhinestones!

I paint pet portraits. I want to make more $$$. Who doesn't?

What are your opinions about tote bags and purses with pet portraits on them? I sew too.

Do you think that they would sell and if so, what do you think a good price would be?

Think about a regular canvas tote bag with a washable, hand painted portrait of your cat or dog or hampster (whatever) and sequins and rhinestones sewn on for glitz. What do you think I could charge?

Think about a canvas Hobo bag with a pet portrait and glitz (Sequins and rhinestones) What would you pay for that?

Now, if the bags were premade, if I painted them with generic dog and cat breeds to supply a boutique what would you pay versus a special order with your own dog or cat or whatever on it?

What would a good price be? I don't want to be unreasonable to my customers or to myself. So, your feedback is appreciated!

I recommend starting with Marketing 101: C and the 4 Ps.

C is your Customer. Who is she? Age, geographic region, income level, educational level, family status, etc. While you'll certainly sell a bag to anyone with the cash, who is your primary customer - the one most likely to buy your product? You may have more than one target customer, e.g. direct consumers and also area retailers. You'll need to define each customer and rethink the 4 Ps for each of them.

The first P is Product: you've got that pretty well defined. Although a survey of likely customers is always a good idea to look for ways to refine your product. What colors, materials, sizes, etc. are most preferable?

The next P is Price: This should be determined by three factors: (1) what the going rate for similar products is, (2) what your cost to produce is, including your time, and (3) what your customers expect to pay. If your main customer is women earning $100,000+ annually, you don't want to price it cheap. If she's a Wal Mart regular, you don't want to price it high. You get the idea.

The next P is Place. Where will you make these? Where will you sell them? Out of your house? Online through eBay? Local gift shops? Art fairs? Where do customers seek out similar products currently?

Finally, the last P is Promotion. How will you make customers aware of this product? Personal selling? Magazine or Newspaper ads? Through other retailers? Don't forget the power of public relations here: sending out press releases can pull in a mountain of free advertising if done right.

Two last recommendations:

Make a list of all known competitors. Determine what competitive edge your product has over each of them that will make customers buy from you. Price? Quality? Selection? Availability? Appearance? If you can't identify that advantage, you need to rethink the product.

Make a 12 month revenue and expense projection. List all of our monthly costs - variable ones like materials utilities and advertising expenses as well as fixed ones like internet, cell phone, insurance, etc. Add in your (conservative) estimates of how many products you'll sell and at what price. This helps in determining how much money to spend (and where), and to verify that this will be a profitable venture!
