A platform bird feeder is the easiest feeder to have for it efficiently feeds the greatest number of birds, either on short legs right on the ground, or hanging up off the ground. It is simply a flat tray with short sides that has either short legs or a hanging wire. Some models come with both.
For anyone who is just getting started with feeding birds, platform bird feeders are a great way to begin. Birds find their food by seeing it and by seeing other birds feeding. An open tray is easy to see and easy to use. The larger the feeder, the more birds can feed at a time. It is fine to offer food directly on the ground, but then it is necessary to clean up the left over debris. Instead of throwing seed directly on the ground, there are many advantages to using a platform bird feeder on short legs. The ground feeders such as doves, cardinals, towhees, juncos, quail, mourning doves, thrushes, etc. will quickly learn to eat from it and the seed will stay cleaner and dryer as most platform bird feeders have a screen bottom. Most of the empty hulls will be left in the platform feeder for easy cleanup. When using a ground feeder, be sure to place it at least ten feet from any shrubs or other protective plants that could hide an approaching cat.
Platform bird feeders can also be hung. They are easy for birds to use, easy to add seed and kitchen scraps to and will attract a wide variety of birds such as blackbirds, bluebirds, nuthatches, jays, tanagers, titmice, woodpeckers, finches, doves, chickadees and cardinals. With a screened bottom, these are even visited regularly during a rain storm for they drain quickly and dry quickly when the sun comes out. There are even models that are covered which are especially useful in areas that get snow. Hanging platform feeders can easily be used to offer an assortment of foods that are out of reach of dogs, raccoons, squirrels, etc. Especially during the winter when natural food is scarce, platform bird feeders are perfect to offer an assortment of kitchen leftovers such as scraps of bread, cake, biscuits and pancakes, as well as cooked oatmeal, farina and other cereals. Most birds also enjoy left over mild cheeses, fruit, crackers, pasta, cornmeal, nuts, popcorn, cooked meat fat and clean eggshells. There are lots of choices. Don't throw away those small leftovers or over ripe fruit. Give them to the birds. A hanging platform feeder is perfect for this. Remember, birds also love peanut butter. Mix it with some cornmeal and it will go further. If you don't have a place to hang a platform bird feeder, it is fine to put leftovers in a ground feeder, but know that overnight it will probably be cleaned out by the local four legged night creatures.
Platform bird feeders are very easy to fill and keep clean. They also make it easy to view and photograph birds without the bird feeder getting in the way. There are however, two significant drawbacks to these feeders. If there are squirrels in the area, this quickly becomes their own feeding table unless the feeder is hung using baffles for protection. Also, the seed is not protected from rain, snow and wind. During times of bad weather, it is a good idea to put out only enough food and seed to last for one day.

Identifying berries....?
Can someone PLEASE help me. I am helping my son with a school project about seeds. We had to collect traveling, hitchhiker, kitchen, and animal express seeds (seeds traveled by animals). Well...we found some berries that I know birds eat and well...we all know how they are dispersed. The problem is I don't know the name of these berries. I found a picture of them when I went to google.com and clicked "Images" and typed in "berries" , on the second page it is the third image. If someone could help me I would be forever grateful! Looks to me like pokeweed, very common weed around here too. Actually, I didn't think birds eat this particular one. At least I never saw any that do and thought they were poisonous? Perhaps it is the primal spirit in us, bringing out the homing instinct, but it seems that everyone likes the idea of having a newly renovated kitchen! Experts tell us that it need not cost a lot of money and that it will likely return at least three quarters of it back to you when you sell the home.
While many home-owners can push the kitchen renovating bill up and over the $40,000 mark, it is possible to spend half that. According to Money Magazine, the average kitchen can be renovated for less than $20,000.
This includes new counter tops, a new island, a fitted pantry, new lighting, the latest appliances and refurbished cabinets. Many home-owners do not realize that brand new cabinet doors are fairly inexpensive and almost free of labor costs.
Another option is to have your cabinet doors "re-faced". This entails the removal of your cabinet doors and drawers, a wood veneer is then applied and they are returned to your kitchen.
If spending this $20,000 will, in fact, add an extra $15,000 to the value of your home, then what's holding you back? To bring your kitchen up to date, Money Magazine suggests that a kitchen island and a pantry are the latest 'must-haves' for kitchens.
If you do not have an island, you may wish to consider taking out a wall to make room for one. Perhaps this could be where you would build in a pantry if you do not have a closet that you can convert. If you are not keen to take a whole wall out, take out the section that will allow you to insert an island. It is inexpensive to get a builder to add a reinforced steel beam in the ceiling.
The magazine also suggests that a bland island is unimaginative and that it should serve a secondary function as well as being there for extra counter top space.
Often a small sink or cook top is incorporated into an island. Many families choose an island with a narrow breakfast bar designed on one side and add high stools; this avoids eating in the dining room.
Lighting fixtures fitted underneath the wall cabinets which light up the countertop are a very inexpensive luxury touch. Fluorescent strip lighting is also more economical to run than regular bulbs, so an economical plus.
Unless your home is in the top neighborhood, you will probably not benefit from the high end appliances. However, name brands, warranties, newness and looks all count, but this still keeps you in the medium price range.
If you have money left over, top of the line faucets with all the bells and stoppers can be very impressive. Oh yes - and the painting and decorating is all down to you!

Might depend on the wardrobe. Painting is always possible--pick the colour that goes with the rest of your kitchen. Adding shelves might be trickier, wardrobes are often thin-walled since the clothes hang from the top, and if its walls are thin they may not be sturdy enough to hold shelves with food on them.

Everything is packed and ready, including your blueprints on how to find those gorgeous kitchen paint colors that can turn your kitchen truly rustic. This Kitchen Table Bird Book grew to publication over a period of three years, and changed form in that time gradually to fit what has seemed its most practical purpose - use by residents of our Great Lakes region who spend most of their bird-watching time at home, inside, looking out windows at feeding, bathing birds. The 77 species discussed and portrayed here represent the most common small birds that come to feeders, or which might land on marsh edge or lawn or woodlands of the type often seen from kitchen windows of this region. The companion Coat Pocket Bird Book contains another 80 species, most of which will be seen afield, but some of which may also come to your feeder. The placement of some species in one or the other of these books was in some cases arbitrarily decided, though our intention all along has been to provide one book for home use, one for field use. These two books were designed primarily for the casual, beginning, and intermediate birdwatcher, though we have been pleased by the positive reception given to the books by birding veterans with hundreds of species included on their ""life lists."" In fact, we believe any birdwatcher, of whatever experience, will find these books valuable and useful reference works. Together, the two books do not include all the birds that visit, nest, or live year-round in this region, but the 157 species collectively represent, we estimate, 90-plus percent of all the millions of birds that will be seen here. Consequently, if you eventually do see all the species depicted in these books, you will be a birdwatching professional.

We have been struggling with those pantry moths/indian meal moths for about 3 years now. we moved and they showed up about 6 mos. later. ugggh! We have the traps, insect spray, foggers, don't keep dry foods out, vacuumed nooks and crannies, and they still exist! Now, we don't see them as much in the kitchen but they seem to have moved to upper floors in our house like our bedroom. I'm just exhausted with this whole effort to rid them and the fact that we can't find the source. Do we need to just settle on the fact that we'll probably have them forever? The only avenue we have not yet tried is bay leaves and I think there are a few other herbal remedies. Do they need to be dried leaves? Does this work? Anyone suffered for a long time like we have? We are very clean, and it's just frustrating. Pest control places won't treat for them either although in the state we used to live we had a service that did fog for them. HELP!!!
Pantry moths are a stored product pest, you'll need to throw anything made from flour and cereal products and any dried foods including peas, lentils and fruits. This will stop the breeding cycle, clean out the cupboards including any cracks and crevices and best to get the Pest controller to spray inside the cupboard and when dry put your stuff back inside.
Are you sure that they are pantry moth because you could have carpet moth, have you got a carpet that seems to have baldy spots or cocoons in them? This would explain why you are seeing moths in other rooms.
