Airlines Continue to Spread Wings Over Mexico

Airlines are responding to increasing U.S. and Canadian demand for service to Mexico by widening service options to the country’s many destinations. With greater air access, the airlines contribute to boosting international tourist arrivals.

During the past six months, a mix of major airlines and low-cost carriers in the United States and Canada have enhanced service schedules to different parts of Mexico through additional frequencies of existing routes and the launch of new services.

“That airlines across the board are increasing flight options to Mexico demonstrates the high degree of confidence the travel industry has in our country, and the interest travelers have in discovering Mexico for themselves. Mexicans are known around the world for their warmth and hospitality, and North American travelers will be welcomed with open arms,” said Magdalena Carral, CEO of the Mexico Tourism Board.

Expansion of air transportation inbound to Mexico is aligned with the goal of the Mexican government’s comprehensive, long-term tourism plan to increase the number of international visitors. With 21.9 million visitors in 2005, the country is ranked seventh as an international tourism destination according to World Tourism Organization figures released in June.

Among the airlines increasing flights is Delta Air Lines. In recent months, the Atlanta-based carrier initiated new non-stop service to Mexico destinations such as Acapulco, Merida, and Ixtapa from Atlanta; Mazatlan from Salt Lake City; and Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Frontier Airlines another carrier on the forefront to expand service to Mexico, has announced plans to launch round-trip service between Denver and Guadalajara. The service will mark the eighth Mexican city to be served by Frontier. The four weekly flights to Guadalajara, slated to begin Dec. 22, are part of Denver-based Frontier’s plans to increase its Mexican service by 30 percent during the peak winter holiday season; Frontier will add flight frequencies from Denver to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. Frontier announced that it will begin new, non-stop service between San Diego and Cancun with one flight weekly starting Dec. 16.

Adding three new Mexico routes this year, United Airlines’ most recent launch was in July connecting Chicago and Cancun. The carrier had initiated its Los Angeles-Cancun and Chicago’s-Puerto Vallarta routes in March. Together, United serves 16 routes between the United States and Mexico excluding two seasonal routes, Denver-Mexico City and Denver-Ixtapa, which run during the winter months. The new flights to Mexico are offered via the United and the airline’s low-cost counterpart, Ted.

Seasonal flight services to be added during the winter months will include American Airlines’ announced plans to start one round-trip, non-stop service weekly from JFK to Mexico’s San Jose del Cabo in the Baja California region, effective Dec. 16 through April 9, 2007. The legacy airline, which has been operating flights to the Mexico market since 1941, currently serves San Jose del Cabo with three flights daily from Dallas/Fort Worth, two daily from Los Angeles, and three weekly flights from Chicago.

Other flight additions to existing routes include service by Alaska Airlines, which will lengthen its list of services to Mexico resort cities this fall with six more weekly flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco, thus increasing its Mexico capacity by 22 percent. The carrier also plans to inaugurate non-stop services between Los Angeles and La Paz, San Francisco and Cancún, and Seattle and Cancún, as well as between Portland, Oregon to both Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

Northwest Airlines’ announcement of additional weekday frequencies during the winter travel season between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Mexico cities Acapulco, Manzanillo and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. The airline, subject to government approval, will also include service from Detroit to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo that will operate from Jan. 20 through March 31, 2007, as well as a new service between Memphis and Cozumel to operate on Saturdays from Feb. 17 through April 14, 2007.

Although Continental Airlines has not added new services in recent months, the airline is a strong player in the market currently operating more than 580 flights weekly to 30 Mexican destinations from Texas airports in Laredo, McCallen and Houston, as well as from Newark’s Liberty International Airport and Los Angeles. Continental did however, announce with Alitalia codeshare expansion already in place to provide improved transfer services between Italy, Canada and Mexico.

Canadian airlines are also hovering over Mexico skies. Air Canada will add 25 more non-stop flights per week this winter between Canada and Mexico for a total of 61 weekly. The new routes to Mexico include service between Toronto to Cozumel and Ixtapa, slated to begin mid-December, as well as a Montreal-Mexico City service introduced on June 17.

Sunwing Airlines’ announced plans to begin this fall to operate one flight each between Montreal and Ottawa to Acapulco on Wednesdays and to Cancun on Fridays. Earlier this year, Sunwing started service between Toronto and Cozumel and the airline will operate a Sudbury and Cancun route for the winter season from December through March 2007.

For the winter season, Sunquest Airlines will also begin services from Hamilton to Cancun and Riviera Maya starting in December.

Mexican airlines also expand services

The increased number of expanded routes, however, has not been limited to international services. Mexican airlines, particularly the low-cost carriers, are also boosting services. Private and semi-private airlines such as Avolar, ABC Interjet and Volaris, as well as Mexicana Airline’s carrier Click Mexicana have launched low-cost flights to different parts of Mexico. Aladia, one of Mexico’s newest airlines, is slated to launch this summer.

Mexico’s domestic service currently caters to approximately 2.5 million passengers, representing some 6.5 percent of Mexican tourists who travel via air within the country.

Flying beyond Mexico borders, Mexican airlines Aeromexico and Mexicana operate daily routes between JFK airport and Mexico City. Mexicana will also operate a route between Baltimore, Maryland and its low-fare carrier Click Mexicana will launch a Cancun-Miami flight later this summer. Avolar also plans to serve a select few of U.S. cities later this year. Within Mexico, Aeromexico is increasing flight offerings with new routes between Mexico City and Villahermosa, Merida and Cancun.

Safety in Style – Electric Gates for Better Living

The 21st century is full of worry. There are more people in the UK than there ever have been and there seem to be more crimes than there used to, too. Long gone are the days when a person could, or would, walk away from their home without locking the doors and windows: the days when the neighbours would pop in by walking straight through the porch without knocking. These days, the entrances to our properties are locked and protected with alarms. Even our driveways and gardens are protected. The best are protected with electric gates.

Everyone has a pretty secure front door. What's the use of that, though, if the grounds of a property are wide open to anyone that takes a fancy to occupy them? Really, a secure house needs gates to enclose the outside parts of its land. Using electric entrances is the perfect solution to the problem. Electric gates are controlled either from inside the house itself, from a car, or with a key fob. That means a person never has to approach the gate in order to open it – and, of course, it shuts automatically. Furthermore, when a gate is closed it is locked and can't be opened again until a command button is pressed.

Using electric opening, closing and locking is just the beginning. Automatic gates can be supplied with a small CCTV camera, or an intercom (or both), which allows home owners to vet their visitors before allowing them in. CCTV enabled gates are also capable of recording comings and goings for future reference – so if an incident does occur there is visual evidence for the police or security company involved to use.

Electric gates, like any other property access, can be alarmed – which means that unauthorised attempts to open them set off warnings inside the house. As with any type of alarm system, the gates can be set up in such a way that a tripped alarm automatically alerts either police or a private security company, who will attend unless otherwise instructed.

Given that this is the kind of thing we've been doing to our houses for years, it's little wonder that the entrances to the whole of our properties are now following suit. Electric gates are a natural progression from the security advances of the last 10 years, allowing home owners of all types to fully secure the perimeters of their property. Securing the edges of a property is a far greater deterrent to would be burglars than just having an alarm – if it's difficult even to get into the garden, all but the most determined thief will give up early.

An automatic gate doesn't have to be bought whole, either. Modern gate technology allows all the sensors, alarms and motor arms that standard electric gates have, to be fitted to any type of entrance barrier. That means two things: first, a person doesn't need to hunt high and low for an electric gate that fits his or her property entrance; and second, older properties with feature gates (like oak gates or farmhouse type gates) can retain the original fittings without compromising their security. Whichever way one looks at it, then, electric gates are the way to go.

Sometimes if you cannot fit furniture into your entrance it helps to try to reduce the size. Perhaps remove excess packaging or remove the legs. This provides the additional clearance that you might need. Another option is to simply tilt the sofa upwards assuming you have normal height ceilings. How To Stop Fence Jumping

Basically, the dog needs to associate a negative experience with jumping up on the fence. But, this negative experience must have three things going for it.

First, the negative must happen right as he is jumping up on the fence. Second, it must be motivational. Kinda like when a cop gives you a ticket for speeding, but the ticket is only for $2, you'll probably wait until you get 100 tickets before you even consider changing your behavior. But, if it's a good $250 ticket, it won't take too many (maybe one or two) to make you stop speeding.

In other words, you must find your dog's sensitivity level. For behavior modification, I'd tend to error on the side of slightly over correcting, rather than under correcting. You don't care if the dog never jumps up on the fence again, and you don't care if he has a poor attitude when it comes to it. (Unlike obedience exercises.) Bottom line is that the correction must be motivational.

And third, he must get the correction every time he does the behavior. Again, if it's a motivational correction, he'll only try it once, twice, or at the most, three or four times before deciding it's not in his best interest.

What should you do? You can try several things. Have a kid hide on the other side of the fence with a high powered garden hose. Tempt him to jump up on the fence. When he does, blast him!

You can also set him up with a training collar and tab (short leash) and go out and give him a correction when he does it, but make sure you keep the dog confined when you can't be there to correct the behavior.

At night, confine him to either a crate or a dog run... so he can't do the behavior and not get corrected for it. (Or if you go out to dinner, and leave him unsupervised.)

Until he drops the behavior, he can't be allowed to do it and not get corrected. So, everytime he has a chance to do it, you must be in a position to correct him.

There are at least three more ways to do this.

1.) Take a sunday afternoon. Put the training collar, and the 1 foot leash on the dog, and leave him in the backyard.... but keep your eye on him through the kitchen window. Have the kid in the next yard create a ruckus, and when the dog jumps up on the fence, you immediately yell "No, no, no!" as you run out the door, and up to the dog, and correct. (No, no, no forces him to remember what he's being corrected for.) Even if he's no longer got his feet on the wall, he should be able to associate the correction with the behavior (within 7 to 12 seconds after the fact.)

2.) You can get a boundary and perimeter electric containment system, similar to what Gene described. The collar will be triggered when he jumps up on the fence. Or you can do the same thing with an electric collar. Set the collar to your dogs sensitivity level (check the manual).... and watch him through the window. When the dog jumps on the wall, you push the button. Shouldn't take more than catching him twice before he never jumps on the wall again.

3.) The poor man's solution is to glue mouse traps (not rat traps!) to the top of the fence, so when the dog jumps up.... "snap!" he receives a negative. This also works well for house plants, too!

Really you can't they are notorious chewers. You can set them up in an aluminum or steel pen so that there is nothing for them to chew on, but then you should put something in there for them to chew on. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

Keep Your Dog Safe: Tips For Dog Safety In Your Home

No matter whether you are bringing a playful puppy home, or a mature dog, you have to make sure there are no hazards in your house and yard that could hurt your new addition to the family.

Puppies and Grown Up Dogs

If this is your first experience with a puppy, or it has been a few years since you had a young dog, you need to recognize that a puppy comes with greater challenges than an older dog. For one thing, puppies love to chew; in fact, they have to chew things in order to develop their adult teeth. They aren't particular about what they chew, however your favorite shoes, books left on the floor, children's toys, furniture legs, articles of clothing almost anything they can sink their little teeth into is fair game. You need to be vigilant about what you leave lying around that they can access. This is not only so favorite possessions are not ruined, but because some things are not good for puppies to chew. Parts of toys that can break off when a puppy chews them can be a choking hazard or cause an abdominal obstruction if swallowed. So, the first step is to walk through your house and see what needs to be put away, or put up, out of the range of the pup.

This is not to say that older dogs can't cause similar problems. In their case, height is another consideration. A large dog or a dog with long legs can reach amazing heights when he stretches. You may find that anything left on tables, desks, or kitchen counters is in "play" for him. He may be anxious when you first bring him home, and this can bring on mischievous or even destructive behavior for a while until he gets acclimated and feels truly at home. Again, tour through the rooms of the house and see if there are things that should be put away, closets closed, etc.

Where Will Your Dog Stay?

You also need to make decisions about what areas of your home are off limits to your dog, and where you want him to stay while you are gone at work during the day, or leave the house for other reasons. Dogs left alone for long periods of time can get bored and this can cause them to search for something to interest them or focus their attention on. Unfortunately, this might include chewing on an electrical cord, or tearing up the upholstery on a chair or couch, or ripping up a pillow. Chewing electrical cords can cause not only tragic shock or even death for your pet, but also could start a fire in your home. Many dogs never pay any attention to electrical cords, so you may not have anything to worry about. But if your dog does start to chew on one, an option is to spray the cord with a bitter agent such as bitter orange, designed to discourage chewing.

Many pet owners select a room of the house to confine the dog while they are away and make sure that room is truly pet-proofed.

what is the best mosquito killer?

my son is allergic to mosquitoes and i can't stand to see him 'not itch' and be in pain. what is the best mosquito killer? electric, spray, ? we bought those $10 mosquito donuts and they don't work. I want to get some thing that is safe for my son to be around and also my pet. thanks

I have an 8 year old daughter, and until a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't let her play in my yard. I tried electronic traps, dunks, sprays, etc. Nothing seemed to work.

Flies have always been serious problem in horse barns. The best thing they found to control flies is a misting system. The mist is a mixture of pyrethrin and water (pyrethrin - from an extract taken from the chrysanthemum flower - pyrethrum), that kills flying insects, but will not hurt pets and animals.

It is the same system the mosquito misting companies advertise as a "new system" specifically for killing mosquitoes. The truth is these systems have been around the horse business since the early 50s. It was originally designed to kill flies in barns and protect expensive horses, and is still used. After the West Nile virus scare surfaced, some young enterprising entrepreneurs found out the “fly killing” system used in barns also kills mosquitoes, so they put two and two together, changed the marketing, increased the price by over 400% to take advantage of the fear of West Nile, and there you have it, capitalism at work. But it is the only thing that truly works.

You can purchase the mister components on-line and do-it-yourself, or you can have a mosquito system company install it for you. It comes with a 55 gallon drum to hold the mixture. You have to refill the drum every 2 to 4 months, depending on how many misting nozzles, and how much and how often you program the system to mist. It is extremely easy to program, like a sprinkler system. A couple of times before sun-up, and a couple of times again after sundown, for 30 seconds at a time is all it takes.

I installed one on my own house for one-seventh the price I was quoted by a company specializing in that business. It took me just over 4 hours to do the entire exterior perimeter of my 3100 sq. ft. single story house. Finally, I have not seen a mosquito, fly, spider, roach, etc. since I put the system in three weeks ago. I am truly impressed, and finally relieved.

You can also buy a similar product to spray with a water hose and a bottle you connect to a garden hose, but it is not quite as good, and you will have to re-spray every couple of weeks.

Do your dogs act different on vacation?

We just got back, from vacation and every year my dogs[I have 3] A Silky ,Westie,and a Sheltie act aggresive while we are at our cabin but as soon as we get home they are completely normal. I must add that at home we have a underground pet fence and at the cabin we keep them on leashes. But their on leahes when we go away from home for walks or to visit people and they don't act this way. Also we have been going to the same cabin for 5 years, so you would think they would be use to it. And please no suggestions about boarding, We take them everywhere and can't bare to leave them. They love going to the beach and being with us they just act differently there.

My dog does this. I think it is because she becomes used to her everyday routines, and when we start doing something different somewhere else, she gets overly excited. She'll pull on the leash and perk her ears up in ways she doesn't normally. And I completely understand what you mean about your dogs going everywhere with you...the only place my dog doesn't go is Disney World, and that's just because they won't let her in. AND I don't believe in kennels.
